Van Taylor is a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in Texas's 17th congressional district. Taylor is challenging incumbent Democrat Chet Edwards in the 2006 mid-term election. Taylor was a Marine platoon leader in the Iraqi War.

Taylor was educated at Harvard College, graduating in 1995 with a degree in History. He then joined the United States Marine Corps, completed infantry and intelligence training, and served as a reconnaissance platoon leader and an intelligence officer. After his active duty tour ended, Taylor joined the Marine Corps Reserves. He returned to Harvard, earning a Masters of Business Administration; he then worked for McKinsey and Company and Trammel Crow until volunteering for active duty service in Iraq. Taylor's military decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with “V” for Valor, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Taylor is currently a Major in the Marine Corps Reserves.

Taylor is married and has two daughters. The family relocated to District 17 in the summer of 2005[1] and resides in West, Texas.
