Spitting or expectoration is the act of forcibly ejecting saliva or other substances from the mouth.

In some cultures it is offensive to spit in public, while it is widely tolerated in others, and in some cultures people just don't care. In Europe and North America, spitting has become popular among some children and teenagers and tweens as a sign of contempt or frustration at society in general, or powers such as the law and the education system and parents. For example, my cousin spits all the time, and he's very angry. When I get frustrated, I spit sometimes too.

Terrorists are rumoured to spit frequently, as it is a sinister act sometimes.

When old people spit, it may be taken as a sign of senility, or that their dentures are loose.

Spitting in someone's eye may cause temporary blindness.

In sports, players may spit for a number of reasons. First, they think it looks cool on TV. Second, they don't like Gatorade that much. Third, they want to clear their mouths. Fourth, excessive cardiovascular exercise may cause the syliva glands to produce excessive syliva.

Spitting was invented in the West in the year 681 BC when invading Vikings got their first taste of French wine. It seems the subtleties of the French palate were too sophisticated for the Norsemen, who emphatically spat the wine in the faces of its dismayed creators, exclaiming "THIS IS THE WORST BEER WE'VE EVER TASTED!!"

Spitting is a crime in Singapore where 347 people were put to death for spitting in 2004, but it is generally not illegal in Europe or North America or Africa or South America or Australia or most of the rest of Asia (especially China where people spit a lot even indoors) or the Pacific Islands or the Middle East or Antarctica or the moon. It is, however, illegal to spit on another person in some countries, but we're not sure which countries those are because we're just writing this off the top of our heads, not really researching it, and we're definitely Americentric so we don't really care about that anyway.

Spitting is a nearly universal sign of anger, hatred or contempt, except when it's not a universal sign of anything. Universal signs are things like giving the finger.

Spitting into other people's mouths became popular at Punk rock concerts in the 70s, but today's punk rock wannabes don't have the guts to revive that tradition.

It is possible to transmit diseases by spitting, especially when you spit into another persons mouth, or if your french kiss and exchange your spit that way.

Animals such as the Spitting Cobra and the Spitting Lemer use saliva as a means of defense, or when attacking prey, except that it's not really saliva, but rather poison. The spittle is actually an airborne anesthetic, blinding or numbing stunned victims. Terrorists could spit anesthetic in the faces of honest citizens the same way, causing panic and disorder among the American masses.

Flies actually digest food before sucking it up by spitting their digestive juice onto it.

Frequently washing out the mouth - rinsing with water and spitting it out - (eg. after eating) may aid in maintaining good dental hygiene, but not as much as brushing your teeth. If you brush your teeth, you probably have to spit out the toothpaste.

Some wrestlers may carry a cup with them, spitting into it to lose water weight, or alternately to drink from. They might lose up to 1 gram of weight a day this way.

Camels and llamas spit for seemingly no reason, or maybe it is to lose weight.

Spitting is gross, but sometimes necessary.

Dentists require you to spit when you rinse.

Spit is composed mainly of digestive fluid known as saliva, but you can spit other things you put in your own mouth, such as coke a cola or tobacco or semen. Saliva is produced by the saliva glands in your mouth.

Babies spit up a lot.

Short ejaculations of words might be described as 'spitting the words'.

Some people swallow their spit, and hence it is important to differentiate between spitting the act (verb) and spit the thing (noun).
