Physical triple stars should go in the subcategory Triple star systems. If a triple star is known to have one or more optical components, or if it is not known to be physical, place it here.

Many stars have optical companions, and there is no clear-cut criterion for what constitutes a triple star. It is suggested that editors determine whether or not stars should be added to this category by consulting the Washington Double Star Catalog or a similar catalog of double and multiple stars.

Triple stars are not the same as trinary stars.
