Celeste is an upcoming platforming video game by Matt Thorson and Noel Berry.
Gameplay
Celeste is presented as a series of challenging platforming levels as the player guides the character up a mountain. The player can move, jump, and dash the character across platforms, but the player can only perform a dash once before touching ground again. The character's hair changes color from red to blue to signify when the dash ability has been depleted. The character can pass through a balloon to replenish her jump mid-air. Collectible strawberries scattered throughout the levels add a score-based competition to the game.[1]
Development
Noel Berry (Skytorn) and Matt Thorson (TowerFall) created a prototype of Celeste in four days during a game jam. The result was a difficult platformer with 30 levels for the Pico-8 fantasy video game console designed for speedrunning and precision reflexes. Kill Screen noted that the game was a departure from Thorson's TowerFall, and had more in common with the game mechanics of his older games and Super Mario Maker work.[2] The developers also used ideas from difficult, Super Nintendo-era platformers.[3] Berry and Thorson developed the game into a standalone release with over 90 levels.[4] They livestreamed parts of their development process on Twitch. The game was also demoed at the 2016 PAX West Indie Megabooth.[5] Celeste is planned for release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and macOS on January 25th, 2018.[6][7]
Reception
Eurogamer and Engadget compared the game's difficulty to that of Super Meat Boy.[8][9]
