North Tonight is stv's nightly news programme covering the North of Scotland. The show is broadcast live at 6pm from Monday to Friday. Its daily equivalent, North Today is shown at various points throughout the day, with its main bulletin at 13.50, during the ITV Lunchtime News from 13.30. Scotland Today covers stv's Central Scotland region, with BBC Scotland providing a national service for Scotland, in the shape of Reporting Scotland.
Significant points in the history of North Tonight include the coverage of the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988 and the resignation of Dr. Ian Oliver who was Chief Constable of Grampian Police in 1998. North Tonight also covered the murder of Aberdeen schoolboy, Scott Simpson in the mid-nineties. Its predecessor, Grampian Today, had the first live broadcast from an oil platform in the North Sea, as well as the first live broadcast from the summit of Cairn Gorm.
The programme is aired from Aberdeen, and has studios in Inverness, Dundee and Stornoway. North Tonight / Today received a total makeover at the same time as its Southern counterpart Scotland Today, this is due to the latter moving to studios at Pacific Quay, Glasgow in the summer of 2006 and the creation of the new stv brand. The new-look came into effect on Monday 24 July 2006. [1]
