Gotham (gŏth´əm) is a a town in Nottinghamshire, England. It is also a sobriquet for New York City first used by Washington Irving in the Salmagundi Papers (1807) as a satirical reference to the English town.[citation needed] The nickname was later appropriated by Bob Kane for Gotham City in his Batman series of comic books.
