Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O'Connell[1] (born December 18, 2001[2]), known professionally as Billie Eilish, is an American singer and songwriter. Her first experience with music occurred when she was 8 years old with the Los Angeles Children's Choir. She crafted most of her music with her brother Finneas O'Connell, who she dubbed her "partner-in-crime" in an interview with Vogue.[3] Her debut single, "Ocean Eyes", went viral and has racked up over 35 million streams on Spotify alone as of February 2018. Her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me was released in August 2017. Following the EP's success, Apple named Eilish as its newest Apple Music UPNEXT artist a month later in October 2017.[4]

Life and career

Early beginnings and "Ocean Eyes"

O'Connell was raised in Los Angeles to a family of actors and musicians.[2][5][6] Her parents are actress-musician-screenwriter Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell.[7][8][9] She was homeschooled along with brother Finneas O'Connell. Billie joined the Los Angeles Children's Chorus at age eight. At age eleven, Billie began writing and singing her own songs, taking after Finneas who was already performing, writing, and producing his own songs with his band. In October 2015, Billie recorded the song "Ocean Eyes", initially written by Finneas for his band, and sent it to her dance teacher, who hoped to choreograph a dance to it.[10][11]

Billie Eilish released "Ocean Eyes" as her debut single on SoundCloud in 2016. A music video was released on March 24, 2016, and a video of Eilish performing a dance to the song was released on November 22, 2016. That year, Eilish also released the single "Six Feet Under".[12][13] "Ocean Eyes" was rereleased worldwide through Darkroom and Interscope Records on November 18, 2016 to positive critical reviews. "The song is pure pop; a ballad about longing for reconciliation with an ex. I can imagine it becoming a major hit," said Chris DeVille of Stereogum. On January 14, 2017, Eilish released an EP with four remixes of "Ocean Eyes".[14]

2017–present: Don't Smile at Me

Following the success of the "Ocean Eyes" remixes, Eilish released the single "Bellyache" on February 24, 2017.[15] "Bellyache" was produced and co-written by Finneas O'Connell, with a music video directed by Miles and AJ being released on March 22, 2017. On March 30, Eilish released the track "Bored" as part of the soundtrack to the television series 13 Reasons Why.[16] On June 30, 2017, Eilish released the single "Watch"[17] with a follow-up single, "Copycat" released on July 11, 2017, along with the announcement of her debut EP, Don't Smile at Me. Each Friday in July, Eilish would add another single to the EP. It was in this manner that the singles "Idontwannabeyouanymore" and "My Boy" were released.[18] Don't Smile at Me was released on August 12, 2017.[19] After the release of "Don't Smile at Me" Billie collaborated with American rapper Vince Staples for a remix of "Watch" titled "&Burn". Later, In January 2018, Billie announced the "Where's My Mind" tour, which ends in August 2018. For the 2018 record store day, Billie has announced that she will have a 7" vinyl which will feature an acoustic version of her song "Party Favor" and an acoustic version of "Hotline Bling" by Drake.
