Great Mills High School is a comprehensive public high school in Great Mills, Maryland, United States. It serves students in grades 9–12 in the mixed rural and suburban area at the confluence of the Potomac River, Patuxent River, and Chesapeake Bay. It belongs to the St. Mary's County Public Schools system, and is associated with two other county high schools: Leonardtown High School and Chopticon High School. The school is accredited by the Middle States Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Maryland State Department of Education.
The school has an enrollment of more than 1600, with an ethnic makeup reflecting the community: 51% Caucasian, 40% African American, 5% Asian, 4% Hispanic, 1% other. Many of the families are employed by NAS Patuxent River, government contractors, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and others involved in the area's traditional agricultural and water-related businesses.
Great Mills High School is among the oldest continually operating school in St. Mary's County and the State of Maryland. It was founded in 1929 as one of the original high schools in the county. The campus now encompasses several acres and has a football, soccer, and field hockey field and uses a county pool next door.
The school houses a STEM program.
Great Mills High School athletes are known as the Hornets. Great Mills High School Athletics belongs to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference and competes in Division 3A in state competitions.
The current principal of Great Mills is Jake Heibel.
2018 shooting
A shooting took place at Great Mills High School on the morning of March 20, 2018 at 7:58 am, when a student opened fire in a school hallway, critically injuring a 16-year-old female student and injuring a 14-year-old male student who was left in stable condition. The assailant fired another round simultaneously with a single round fired by school resource officer Deputy First Class Blaine Gaskill, who had responded to the scene in less than sixty seconds. The assailant was apprehended and later died. He was reportedly 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins, who had previously been in a relationship with the injured female student. It is unclear whether the assailant was killed or took his own life.[1][2]

- Stephen Ball (class of 2000) – radio host at 106.7 The Fan FM; hosts a weekly sports radio broadcast on the CBS affiliate.[3] A former producer of "The Mike Wise Show," he also is a sports writer for "The Washington Post".[4]
- David Bell (class of 1976) – guitarist for the Rayvns. Their hit song "Raised on the Radio" was featured in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
- Clifford Dukes (class of 2000) – Arizona Rattlers defensive lineman
- Roy Dyson (class of 1966) – Maryland State Senator representing Maryland District 29: Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's County

Military Casualties
- Sgt. Ryan P. Baumann - 101st Airborne Division, Motor Transport. KIA in Afghanistan on August 1, 2008, graduated in 2003. Sgt. Baumann is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
- Cpl. Matthew P. Wallace - Army's 10th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. KIA in Baghdad July 21, 2006. Graduated in 2003. Cpl. Wallace is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
- Lt. Nicholas Juron - Navy's Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 48, Detachment 9. Killed when his SH-60B Seahawk crashed into the Pacific off the coast of Colombia just after launching from USS DeWert. December 13, 2005. Body was never recovered. Graduated in 1998.[7]
