Camp Lazlo is an Emmy nominated, American animated television series created by Joe Murray, produced by Cartoon Network Studios and currently airs on Cartoon Network. The show features a Boy Scout-like summer camp with a cast of all animal characters, along with a "retro" type of humor and silliness which is akin to Murray's previous series, Rocko's Modern Life (which aired on Nickelodeon a decade earlier). The show focuses the wacky adventures of the Brazilian spider-monkey named Lazlo and with his friends, Raj the elephant and Clam, the abino pygmy rhino. The three embark on events that later end up into trouble. Each episode is split into two parts approximately 11 minutes long.

Carlos Alazraqui, Tom Kenny and Doug Lawrence, who did much of the voice work on Rocko's Modern Life, provide lead voices in this show as well, along with veteran voice actors like Jeff Bennett, Jodi Benson, Kenny's wife and Mr. Show co-star Jill Talley, and Alazraqui's Reno 911! co-star and first time voice acting, Steve Little.

Camp Lazlo premiered on July 8, 2005 with episodes on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT in the USA, but as of June 26, 2006, the show airs Monday through Friday at 6:30 PM US ET/PT which is coincidentally the day that Teletoon started airing the show and it airs it at 8:30 ET/PT.

Comparing Camp Lazlo and Rocko's Modern Life

Although there are similarities, there's a noticeable difference in the two shows content-wise. Rocko's Modern Life was known for its crazy imaginative sequences and sometimes use of "adult" humor, and despite the double-entendres, somehow it still managed to slip by with a TV-Y rating. In fact, some content of Rocko's Modern Life was so adult-oriented that the clips were pulled off the air. Camp Lazlo, however, lacks all of the above elements, but for some reason is rated with a higher TV-Y7 rating.

There are, however, some distinct similarities:

  • Created by Joe Murray.
  • Carlos Alazraqui voices the protagonist of both series.
  • Tom Kenny and Mr. Lawrence supplied some of the comic-relief character voices on both shows.
  • Mark O'Hare was storyboard writer on "Rocko" and was producer-director on "Lazlo."
  • The well-known comedy writer Martin Olson was staff writer on both shows, and also contributed a number of crazy songs to both series.
  • All of the characters are animals.
  • The episode "Movie Night" claims that when a little boy becomes a big boy, the planets align and alter their very being. A similar concept was used in the great Rocko's Modern Life episode "Born to Spawn" (written by Spongebob-creator Stephen Hillenburg, Mark O'Hare and writer Martin Olson) for when turtles became old enough to become adults.
  • In "Waiting for Edward", Edward says, "I hate my life", in the same way that Ed Bighead did in Rocko ("I hate my life" was one of his catchphrases.)
  • In the Rocko's Modern Life episode Floundering Fathers, a character resembling Lazlo is seen in the back of the parade, only he is a female and wearing white and green clothes.
  • The first half-hour episode occurred in the second seasons.
  • In the episode "It's No Picnic", the Bean Scouts and Squirrel Scouts have a pinecone-sitting contest of doom. As most of the scouts fall off one by one, nurses appear carrying a stretcher repeating the word "Hup hup hup hup..." as the nurses did in Rocko's Modern Life when an injury occurred.
  • Lumpus and Heffer's noses look incredibly similar.

Continuity errors and goofs

  • In "Beans and Pranks" when Lumpus is walking to the wall when he is covered in food Slinkman took off his hat but in the next scene the hat is still on then he takes it off.
  • In the episode, "Mascot Madness" when Edward sees Clam and Raj's Jumping Beans act he hates it, then in the next shot he could be seen applauding, then after that shot and the rest of the episode he hates it.
  • In the episode, Bowling for Dinosaurs, you can see the camp gate behind Lumpus's bowling alley. But since the bowling alley is next to the Scoutmaster's Cabin, the camp gate should be almost directly across from the cabin.
  • In the episode "Campers All Pull Pants Down" one of the campers, which is Samson, by the campfire tells Lazlo something, but when Lazlo is remembering it in the cave he hears Edward saying it.
  • In the episode Beany Weenies, two Lazlo's can be seen, one next to Commander Hoo Ha and the other one in the group with the bean scouts.
  • In the episode "Racing Slicks", Edward can be seen twice with Lazlo's coloring of lower head, head, skin, hair, hat placement, and nose.
  • In "Beans And Pranks" when everyone is cheering and carrying Scoutmaster Lumpus out of the mess hall, Clam says, "Boris is Slinkman!" but his mouth doesn't move.
  • Near the beginning of "Creepy Crawly Campy", when Raj is looking at a bug, his eyelids briefly change color.
  • Near the beginning of "Temper Teepee", when Edward is playing checkers with Samson, Edward moves a red checker, but then Samson wins with a red checker.
  • Also in "Temper Teepee" when Gretchen and Edward are playing Lazlo in checkers when Lazlo moves a black checker it changes red.
  • Yet again in "Temper Teepee" when Edward, Gretchen and Lazlo start their game of checkers the pieces are already moved.
  • In Squirrel Seats when the campers enter the bus again, all the scouts are sitting, including Dave and Ping Pong, who were not present before. Edward pokes fun at this intentional error by saying, "when were you on this bus?" to which they reply, "We've been here this whole time".
  • In Tomato Paste, Samson changes from grey to white in every screenshot.
  • In the episode Tusk Wizard, it can be seen that Raj has lost his tusks, however, in the next shot, you can see Raj's tusks in place.

this show has homos in it

In "Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp", the campers apparently sing the camp Alma Mater, "By the wondrous Leaky waters..." which is set to the Cornell University Alma mater "Far Above Cayhuga's Waters". The lyrics are:

By the wondrous leaky waters
And great Mt. White Head
Stands the pretty, good Camp Kidney,
Not too bad all said.
Not the greatest, not the smartest,
Not the best are we...BUT!
Proud to be the second best camp,
Here on Lake Leaky!
Give us flea-invested blankets,
Cabins that are old,
Loud speakers that pop and gargle,
Showers full of mold.
Healthy food and giant head lice
They will never break,
The spirit of our Kidney campers
Here on Leaky Lake.

Awards

The series won three 2006 Puncinella Awards for Best Animated Series for Children and Best Animated Series for all ages and Lazlo was the winner of Best Character at the 10th Cartoons By The Bay Festival in Postino, Italy. It was the second consecutive year that a Cartoon Network series won the latter two awards, as Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Blooregard Q. Kazoo won the awards the year before.

"Hello Dolly / Over Cooked Beans" was nominated for an Emmy in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming less than One Hour) category, but was defeated by The Simpsons. The episode has been hosted on the Cartoon Network website and can be viewed here.

Video Game

A Game Boy Advance game called "Camp Lazlo: Leaky Lake Games" has been scheduled for release in December 1, 2006.

Camp Lazlo Press Kit with DVD

The only Camp Lazlo-only DVD is included on the Camp Lazlo Press Kit, which was given away as a promo item for the show before it aired. It contained file sheets of the show and a DVD with four episode (2 half-hour episodes): "Gone Fishin' (Sort Of)/Bean Are From Mars" & "Parasitic Pal/It's No Picnic". This item can only be acquired through someone sells it through eBay, which are rare. If lucky, you might acquire the Press Kit, DVD & a shirt as an extra.

Although Camp Lazlo does not have its own DVD (except the press kit), 2 episodes have appeared on Cartoon Network themed DVDs. Hello Dolly appeared on the Cartoon Network Fridays - Volume 1 DVD, released on September 19, 2006. Snow Beans, a christmas-themed episode of the show, was released on the Cartoon Network Christmas: Volume Three DVD on October 3, 2006. [3]

Trivia

  • In the episode Squirrel Seats, Raj asks Clam what Patsy wants to do with Lazlo on the bus and Clam quickly responds: "l'amour de chanti vou", in French.
  • Chuck and Leon from Rocko's Modern Life made a small cameo appearance. They appeared when Lazlo was stacking beans but wore red and green instead of yellow-green and wore sunglasses and sweaters. [citation needed]
  • In the episode Parasitic Pal, the leech attached to Lazlo is named Lamarr, a possible reference to the Half Life 2 character Lamarr.
  • The Guinea Pig on the cover of Dreamboat magazine in the episode "Hard Days Samson" name is Hamly Manster. If you switch the first three letters in his first and last name, it spells "Manly Hamster".
  • In the episode, "Burpless Bean", Raj seems to be cheering even though he's supposed to be part of the act at the end of the episode.
  • In "Mascot Madness" there is a place called Madison Squirrel Garden which is a reference to New York's Madison Square Garden.
  • In "Camp Samson" when Edward tells Sampson he is on the ads, it say Murray's Taxidermy, a reference to the show's creator, Joe Murray.
  • In "Camp Samson", Edward told Samson that the bear camper had no name. However, in other episodes he goes by the name Gordon.
  • The name of Edward's mom is Susan.
  • The main theme song plays on the children's song "B-I-N-G-O".
  • The Dung Twins' heights are 6'1".
  • The Lemming quadruplets have two moms and two dads, which means they have no relation to each other, unless the fathers are brothers, & the mothers sisters, which would make them Lemmingets both brothers and cousins.
  • Two of the episodes ("Parasitic Pal" and "Loogie Llama") featured hilarious songs by staff writer Martin Olson that were both sung by Tom Kenny (voice of Lumpus and Spongebob) and purposely had a similar melody, tempo, etc.
  • In "The Weakest Link", the "Big, Hairy Mountain Man" has the same voice as Eduardo of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, as both were voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • The episode "It's No Picnic" was first broadcast on the afternoon of July 8, 2005: the same day that the first episode premiered.
  • Some background music and sound effects in Camp Lazlo came from SpongeBob SquarePants and other shows. This is due to the fact some of the songs and effects from Camp Lazlo come from the Associated Production Music library, some of which have also been used in shows such as The Ren and Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants, and My Gym Partner's a Monkey.
  • In "Prodigious Clamus," Lumpus states that the puzzles he handed to the scouts (to solve in a few seconds to find out the camp's genius) had 1000 pieces, however, the puzzle boxes read "500" pieces.
  • Edward is the youngest camper at Camp Kidney, according to "Movie Night", but oddly, has the most adult voice.
  • In "Movie Night" all characters heard in "Mountain Zombies from Scab Lagoon" (Including the Woman at the end credits) were voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • The show's first half-hour episode (not being shown as two separate episodes), "Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp" aired on June 29, 2006 in the USA.
  • Lazlo is thirty-five pounds, as revealed in The Big Weigh In.
  • The opening and closing credits font is "Way out West" from P22 type foundry.
  • Camp Kidney Bean Scouts have hand-me-down uniforms and in "Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp", Camp Kidney is obviously inferior to the other camps.
  • The totem pole in Jelly Bean cabin has a monkey, an elephant, and a rhino in descending order.
  • In "Hello Summer, Goodbye Camp", Chef McMuesli is seen tied to the back of a truck and yelling, "Somebody call the cops!"
  • In "Prodigious Clamus," Slinkman claims that there are fourteen campers when there are really twenty.
  • At the end of the episode "Camp Samson" it shows Samson extremely overdosing on his medications, however, almost halfway past the clip, a red box says "Warning: do not administer health buddies in this manner". At the end of the clip, Samson falls over and yells his signature exclamation, "merp", "nerts", or "nurf".
  • Camp Kidney uses a bean theme by using types of beans for each cabin name, which are: Fava, Jelly, Pinto, and Kidney.
  • The Bean Scouts have to collect all the badges possible to promote while in cub scouts you do not have to. Once the scouts collect every merit badge in Camp Kidney, they become Tomato Scouts with Commander Hoo-Hah, as shown in "Tomato Paste".
  • In "Hard Days Samson" we found out that Miss Mucus' first name is Rubella.
  • The animal species seem to switch from civilized to wild, such as Gordon being a Bean Scout and a bear, yet in another episode a bear was seen wild and Lazlo brought it back to camp.
  • Camp Kidney has an alma mater titled "On the Famous Leaky Waters"
  • Doug "Mr." Lawrence played the voice of Filburt, which was a turtle, in Joe Murray's previous cartoon Rocko's Modern Life. In the Camp Lazlo episode "Slap Happy," Mr. Lawrence played the leader of the secret club that Scoutmaster Lumpus wanted to become a part of. Interestingly, the leader was also a turtle.
  • In Seven Deadly Sandwiches, Edward is a poison tree sap sandwich, Samson is a poison skunkberry sandwich, Dave and Ping Pong a poison berry and poison worm sandwich, Clam a poison mushroom sandwich, Chip a poison pickle sandwich, and Skip a poison frog sandwich.
  • In Seven Deadly Sandwichs you can count that there are 18 bean scouts (including the seven deadly sandwiches and Lazlo and Raj) but in Prodigious Clamus Slinkman said there are 14 scouts.
  • Raj has a propeller on his fez.
  • Appropriately, Lazlo's mouth is shaped like a banana (Lazlo is a monkey).
  • It is revealed in "Squirrel Seats" that Gretchen has a crush on Edward. Seeing as they share a similar cynical and pessimistic attitude unlike most of the campers (Lumpus excluded), and continues to develop in "Temper Teepee" (unlike Patsy's obsession with Lazlo).
  • Scoutmaster Lumpus' real name is Lupus. (LUPE.es)
  • In the episode Sweet Dream Baby, when Edward is playing checkers against Sampson he is playing red, but when Sampson moves he is also moving a red piece.
  • Commander Hoo-Hah's appearance changes in the episodes after "Handy Helper/Love Sick".
