Saving Light is a song by trance producers Gareth Emery, Standerwick and singer HALIENE.[1][2][3] The song was released on 30 January 2017, by the Canadian record label Monstercat.[4][5][6] It reached number one on the Beatport overall chart within a week of release, becoming the first trance single to do so in five years.[7][8] Saving Light was voted the "Tune of the Year" for 2017 on Armin van Buuren's radio show A State of Trance,[9] and "Best Original Trance Track" on Reddit's Best EDM of 2017.[10]

Background and composition

Saving Light was originally a demo track that was being worked on by Standerwick and Emery. The demo was given to Emery's manager and sister Roxanne Emery, HALIENE, Matthew Steeper, and KARRA during a writing session, with the lyrics being written in 55 minutes. After the song was written, Emery and Standerwick tried different styles and ideas for 6 months before settling on a classic trance interpretation, with 20 versions being made and tested at Emery's sets before the song was finished.[2] The song debuted at EDC Las Vegas 2016 and was released officially on 30 January 2017, 6 months after its first public debut.[5]

100 percent of Saving Light's proceeds for the first month were donated directly to anti-bullying group Ditch the Label, in hopes of ending bullying and supporting those who were and are victims of bullying, with Emery previously being a bully victim himself. The song is about standing up to bullying and helping bully victims in their time of need and to give support, being their 'saving light'.[1][3]

A North-American tour titled "Saving Light Tour" was announced on 11 July 2017. The tour debuted on 15 September and finished on 18 November.[11][12][13]

Music video

As depicted in this frame, the music video was produced to depict bullying as authentic as possible[1][2]

When developing ideas for the music video, Emery, Roxanne, HALIENE, Matthew Steeper, and KARRA thought of making a music video that would provide hope for dealing with adversity with bullying becoming the target theme. They contacted anti-bullying group Ditch The Label to help develop a storyline on bullying, making sure that the depiction of bullying is as authentic as possible, showcasing the negative and harmful effects of bullying leading to the thought of suicide and how only one voice can save a life.[1][2] In an interview with Billboard magazine, Emery commented on the production process of the music video, stating:

We started thinking about making something that would provide hope for those dealing with adversity. Bullying became a natural theme after that, but Roxanne and I are in our 30s, so we knew our 'take' on the subject would likely miss the mark. So we got in touch with Ditch The Label, who have the world's largest anti-bullying hub, and worked with their founder Liam Hackett to make sure the storyline portrayed this horrible issue in an authentic and sensitive way to the nature of bullying in today's youth. Lee Jones, the director, was the real star of the show though, taking a couple of pages of "ideas" from us and turning it into such a tearjerker.[2]

Reception and release

Sergei Zarovnyi of Billboard stated, "Saving Light is full of emotion at every turn, from the HALIENE's incredible vocals to the gripping production and lyrics that speak to the soul".[2] Steph Evans of EARMILK stated "Partnering with HALIENE, Emery and Standerwick have followed a seemingly formulaic path in creating this track. But what stands out is their command of melody, making Saving Light plain beautiful, emotional and a production that speaks to each level of talent involved".[4]

Caroline O'Keefe of The Nocturnal Times stated: "After hyping up the hard work behind the single as well as the deeper meaning behind it, Gareth and Standerwick delivered a major hit".[5] Abisola Oseni of EDM Identity stated "Saving Light is both melodic and uplifting. This coupled with deep lyrics belted out by HALIENE makes it an amazingly emotional track. The video is even more powerful as it raises awareness of the effects bullying has on kids, adults, and families".[6]

Florito Maniego of We Rave You praised the song, stating "The quality Saving Light possesses certainly does not disappoint as it features a brilliant combination of Emery and Standerwick’s incredible trance elements and HALIENE’s striking vocals. Featuring some heartwarming melodies and gripping synths, this track certainly delivers a magnificent listening experience from start to finish, along with an inspiring message standing up against bullying".[3]

Saving Light (Acoustic Version)

On 17 August 2017, an acoustic rendition of Saving Light was released as a collaboration between the Saint James Music Academy Choir and Monstercat.[14] The music for piano and choir were arranged and scored by Steve Chelliah -Berklee Alum and New York City Guitarist/Composer. Lennon Cihak of EDM.com praised HALIENE's vocals stating "Haliene's vocals are truly what brings this piece to a completely new level. She powers through the entire piece, placing her emotions, feelings, and strength behind the lyrics".[15]

Saving Light (The Remixes)

On 18 August 2017, a remix extended play of Saving Light was released, featuring 6 remixes from various artists, including a remix from American producer Notaker.[16] Notaker's remix was generally well received, with GLU of EDM Sauce stating "Notakers ability to add a gritty digital feel to this song really let him display his own version of this already incredible track".[17] Robyn Dexter of Dancing Astronaut stated: "Notaker’s sound design is second to none, and he continues to prove he’s a force to be reckoned with in the dance music community".[18]

A State of Trance album and Tune of the Year

On 1 November 2017, voting opened to select Armin van Buuren's 2017 "Tune of the Year" for his widely syndicated radio show A State of Trance.[19][20] On 19 December, he revealed the top 50 tracks, including Saving Light, to comprise his 2017 trance mix album, A State of Trance 2017.[21][22][23][24] On 21 December 2017, Armin van Buuren concluded his 4-hour radio show special, with the announcement that Saving Light had won "Tune of the Year".[25][26] It was noted this likely marks the first time a non-trance label (Monstercat) has won the award.[27]
