Lakewood Elementary School is a K-5 public elementary school located in Durham, North Carolina. The current principal is James Hopkins. (As of 6/2017)

Lakewood Elementary follows a traditional school-year calendar and is adopting a community schools model as of 2018.

Recent events

In 2017, Lakewood Elementary's school community organized against the proposed take-over by the North Carolina Innovative School District, which cited the belief that "the school has the tools in place to improve academic outcomes" as reasons why Lakewood was removed from the ISD list for take-over.[1][2]

In June 2018, fifty-seven volunteers from the Duke Triangle alumni group - including Duke alumni and retirees, along with their friends and family - participated in repair and beautification projects at Lakewood Elementary School in Durham. The Duke Alumni Association and Duke University Retiree Outreach worked together to line the new soccer field, catalog library books, paint ceramic tiles in the art room, paint lines on the basketball court, and painnt outdoor railings.[3]
