Episode Summary

Template:Spoiler Shortly after 7:00 AM former President David Palmer, while composing his memoirs, is assassinated in his brother's penthouse suite; almost simultaneously, Michelle Dessler and Tony Almeida are attacked with a car bomb that leaves Michelle dead and Tony in critical condition with head trauma, leading the Counter Terrorist Unit to believe that the couple may have been connected to Palmer.[1][2]

Chloe O'Brian awakes in the arms of a new co-worker from CTU, Spenser Wolff, a situation she immediately regrets and promptly flees. Chloe then learns of the other attacks, escapes an attempt on her life and contacts Jack Bauer about the situation.[1][3] Derek Huxley, son of Diane Huxley, a single mother Jack befriended while in hiding is suspicious and follows him.[4] Jack quickly catches him and they meet Chloe somewhere outside of Los Angeles together. After the three rendezvous they are intercepted by a team of assassins that have been trailing Chloe.[5]

Jack is able to eliminate the assassins and interrogates the critically wounded team leader, promising medical attention if he co-operates.[6] The assassins' leader reveals that "they" assassinated Palmer because he knew too much, framing Jack and that the attempted murders of the three other people who knew that Jack was still alive were simply to help make the frame-up more convincing.[7] After Jack learns that the wounded man was Palmer's assassin and is unable to name for whom he is working, he kills him.[8] Template:Endspoiler
