Li Bonan (simplified Chinese:李伯男; traditional Chinese: 李伯男, pinyin: lǐ bó nán, born November 1978) is a Chinese director. He has produced over forty full-length plays in China[1]. Major successes include How Many Love can be Borrowed (2006)[2], Single Lady (2008)[3], Married to a Budget Husband (2009)[4] and Fake Single (2010)[5]. His plays have won numerous awards, including the 2nd National Drama Culture Award of China[6], the Golden Lion Award (the highest award in the performing arts in China)[7], and Best Director Award at the 9th International Theatre Festival Donzdorf, Germany[8].

Early life and career
Li Bonan was born in 1978 in Beijing. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Directing and an MFA in Directing from the Central Academy of Drama. Li was also educated at Beijing Film Academy and Shanghai Theatre Academy[9].
Upon his graduation from the Central Academy of Drama's undergraduate programme in Directing, Li directed his first full-length play How Many Love can be Borrowed (2006). How Many Love can be Borrowed earned critical acclaim and remains one of the highest-grossing theatrical productions in the People's Republic of China (1949- )[10]. Following his successful debut, Li created the Love Trilogy, which consists of three full-length plays focusing on the relationship issues of China's new generation[11]. The plays in the sequence are Single Lady (2008), Married to a Budget Husband (2009) and Fake Single (2010). The Love Trilogy is a hugh success and the plays are adapted to books[12], films[13] and TV series[14]. Li' is known for adapting contemporary stories on stage[15], and also for conveying traditional context with a modern twist[16].
Li Bonan is the artistic director of Li Bonan Theatre Studio[17], a member of the Tenth National Committee of the China Federation of Literacy and Art Circles[18], and the excellent expert acknowledged by the China Ministry of Culture[19]. He also serves as the artistic director at several regional theatres and performing art organizations across China[20].
