The Steyr Scout is a modern scoped bolt-action rifle manufactured by Steyr Mannlicher and chambered for 7.62 mm NATO (.308 Winchester). It is intended to fill the role of a versatile, lightweight all-around rifle as specified in Jeff Cooper's scout rifle concept. It is made primarily of polymer and was designed to be accurate to 300 to 400 meters. The Steyr Scout is also available in 5.56 mm NATO.

There have been reports of problems with the Steyr Scout rifle regarding parts breakage despite its rather high retail price. The use of plastics and other light material compromises some structural durability of the rifle. These criticisms are often qualified by praise for the concept.

The "breakages" reported were the bipod pivot pin which did not however render the rifle inoperable. The part was subsequently redesigned to improve the strength of the part. There is also an "aftermarket" improved pivot pin which is described in the "Tips & Tricks" section of the Steyr Scout website at www.steyrscout.org.

The other common criticism has been recurring light hits (primer strikes) particularly with early production runs. This is also addressed on the Steyr Scout web site.

A variant of the Scout is the Tactical Elite, a more robust rifle with many features of the Scout but designed primarily to engage short to medium range targets in an Urban Tactical role. Despite being fitted with a short, heavy 570mm (22.4 inch) barrel it can produce high muzzle velocities thanks to a "fast" internal profile. With 155 grain or heavier 7.62mm projectiles and suitable propellant, targets out to 900 yards can be engaged and some have reported acceptable performance out to 1000 yards with high quality match grade ammunition.

Conventional 144 grain 7.62mm projectiles do not seem to work well at longer ranges with this rifle and even moderate barrel fouling substantially reduces accuracy.

The Steyr Scout had appeared in several computer and video games, most notably Counter-Strike, appearing as a more lightweight alternative to the Arctic Warfare Magnum.
