Hoax is an American alternative rock band originating in Freeport, New York.[1] The band is composed of Mike Raj, Frantz Cesar, Paul Brower, Kevin Lopez, and Jacob Lopez who represent multiple nationalities, including Indian, Puerto Rican, Haitian, Ecuadorian, Irish, and Italian.[2][3]

Early life and influences

Hoax was formed at Hofstra University in New York during 2015.[1] The band cites Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Alex Turner, Kanye West, and Arctic Monkeys as inspiration.[2]

Career

They released two EPs, The Truth and Other Lies[4] and words that end with wh(y)[5] in 2017, and their debut album b? is set to be released in 2018.[6] They also released the singles Beach House and Indian Summer in 2016, Pretty and Barely in 2017,[7] and Moon Moon Baby[8][9] and Grow[10][3] in 2018. Moon Moon Baby received positive critical acclaim and was described as "smooth psychedelic-rock of the finest order."[11] The band garnered over 40,000 monthly listeners[12] and over 600,000 streams collectively of the singles Beach House and Indian Summer on Spotify.[13]

Their style has been compared to Young the Giant and Kings of Leon and described as "melancholic"[13] and "bracing yet beautifully sad music."[6]
