Baraboo High School is a high school in Baraboo, Wisconsin.[3] It is a part of the Baraboo School District.

History

When the school district was first established, the district was solely within the City of Baraboo; the district charged tuition for students living in West Baraboo in other surrounding areas.[4]

Prior to 1928 Baraboo High occupied one of two buildings on the block of 311 Ash Street, with both sharing a heating system, and the other being Baraboo's junior high school. In 1928 a new high school campus at 124 Second Street was under construction, designed by Claude and Starck of Madison, Wisconsin and funded by $225,000, and it opened in 1929. The previous junior high building of 311 Ash Street was demolished while the former senior high school building at that address became the junior high building; it was later demolished circa 1960. In 1938 an underground passage was built between 124 2nd and 311 Ash.[5]

In 1961 a new building,[4] in the periphery of Baraboo,[5] was built for $1,719,278.[6] This occurred after the city council decided,[5] in September 1960, to have an advisory referendum held on November 8, 1960 on where the school should be located. The board members ultimately chose a site on Draper Street, even though the largest number of voters had selected the Broadway site. The district boundaries expanded in 1961-1962, so areas previously paying tuition no longer had to.[4]

The 124 Second Street building became the Baraboo Civic Center in 1979. This building is a part of the Downtown Baraboo Historic District,[5] listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 8, 2015.[7]

As of 2018, a new campus is under construction; it was funded by a bond approved by 58% of the voters on November 8, 2016. Groundbreaking occurred on June 7, 2017.[8]

A junior prom photo of about 50 male students from the class of 2019, most apparently giving a Sieg Heil Nazi salute, was shared on social media and quickly spread on Twitter on November 11, 2018.[9] The photo attracted attention from the Auschwitz Memorial Twitter account, which issued a response,[10] State Senator Jon Erpenbach, who represents Baraboo, and Wisconsin Governor-elect Tony Evers,[11] who condemned the photo.[12] As part of her response to the incident, Lori M. Mueller, Baraboo School District Administrator, said "The photo of students posted to #BarabooProud is not reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the School District of Baraboo. The District will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address."[13] The Baraboo Police Department said officers are assisting with the school district's investigation into the "controversial photo."[14]
