System 001 is a Dutch non-profit project focused on removing floating plastic waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using a large floating net-like device.[1] The project launched from San Francisco, California in September, 2018 and reached its target in the Pacific Ocean in Mid October of that year, with the goal of removing half of the floating garbage within its intended range within a five years and 90% of it before 2040.[2]
Device
System 001 consists of a 600 metres (2,000 ft) long floater with a 3 metres (9.8 ft) long skirt that hangs beneath it.[3]
The device encountered some problems during its maiden run, with collected plastic was escaping from its net.[4]
Criticisms
Critics of the project have said that the approach taken by System 001 cannot possibly solve the plastics pollution problem in the ocean.[5][6]
