Amla Ashok Ruia is an Indian social activist [1]

Career

Amla Ruia is known for her work in water harvesting.[2] She is the founder of the Aakar Charitable Trust(ACT), an organization that partners with villages to build check dams that provide water security.[1] In 2011, she was awarded a Lakshmipat Singhania - IIM Lucknow National Leadership Award in the category of Community Service and Social Upliftment.[2][3]

Her first check dam project was in Mandawar village which was a success. Farmers managed to earn up to Rs. 12 crores in a year via the check dams built by Aakar Charitable Trust. Aakar Charitable Trust has built 200 check dams in 100 villages in Rajasthan.[4] Two hundred thousand villagers were able to generate an income of 3000 million rupees per annum. Due to her intervention, hundreds of dry villages in Rajasthan have had their bore wells and hand-pumps recharged. She is popularly known as "PAANI MATA" Water Mother.[5]

Amla and her team have extended their efforts in other states such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. Aakar Charitable Trust also worked in the Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.[6]

Personal life

Amla Ruia was born in Uttar Pradesh.[7] She currently lives in Malabar Hill, Mumbai, Maharashtra.
