Bruce Flatt
Bruce Flatt is a Canadian born (1965) businessman and the CEO of Brookfield Asset Management. He joined Brookfield in 1990 and became CEO in 2002.[1][2] He has been referred to as "Canada's Warren Buffett" due to his "value" investment style, his extended tenure as CEO, and his large investment in Brookfield.[3][4]
Biography
Flatt was born in Canada in 1965. Following university, Flatt worked as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young.[2] In 1990, Flatt joined the predecessor to Brookfield in the company’s investment division [2] In 2000, he became chief executive of Brookfield Properties, the property group.[3] In 2002, Flatt was appointed CEO and the entire business which was re-branded to the Brookfield name in 2005.[4] Flatt and a group of partners own 20% of Brookfield, individually and through a company called Partners Limited, with a stake valued at over $8 billion.
The annual compound stock market return of Brookfield Asset Management has been 18% over the past 20 years. This has led Brookfield to become one of the leading investment managers of alternative assets globally with $350 billion of assets under management in 30 countries. Brookfield has a market capitalization of $45 billion and close to $100 billion of permanent capital when including it's four NYSE listed partnerships that it controls.
In 2018, Flatt was ranked 60th in a list of the top 100 best-performing CEOs published by Harvard Business Review.[5] And in 2017, The Globe and Mail named him CEO of the year.[6] Forbes published a single-issue magazine on May 16, 2017 about Bruce Flatt entitled “World Builder.”[7]
