Pot Farm is a farming simulation social network game sold to East Side Games in 2010. It is similar to Happy Farm and FarmVille[1] but with an emphasis on cannabis cultivation. Gameplay involves planting and harvesting different strains of cannabis and manufacturing cannabis-based food items. Many of the plants, quests and achievements are named after elements of cannabis subculture.

It is available as an Adobe Flash application via the social-networking website Facebook. The game is a freemium game, meaning there is no cost to play but players have the option of purchasing premium content.

By the end of 2010, it was estimated to be earning its developers $148,000 a month.,[2] and was nominated for 'Best Social / Casual Game' in the Canadian Videogame Awards 2011.[3] Most of the recent revenue comes from the subscription service Pot Farm now offers to its players. For $9.99 USD a month, players can become a VIP player, which entitles them to 250 POTBUCKS (in game currency) a month, a hydroponic grower capable of holding 4200 (at present) seeds, all of the same type, and various other perks.

Gameplay

The game starts with an empty plot of land, with the objective of turning it into a profitable cannabis farm. Progress in the game is tracked by your character level, which is increased by experience gained from tending crops, earning achievements and completing certain quests.

Crops are grown from seeds purchased with coins (the game's primary currency) and sold for a profit. The game's secondary currency, potbucks, are earned by gaining levels, planting dynamic seeds, such as mystery, jackpot, potluck, etc. and from earning achievements; they can also be bought with real currency. These are used for purchasing rare seeds and special items.

The developers offer 4 potbuck packages a month, usually, for $49.99 for 750 potbucks and a rare, often unique item, $19.99 for 420 potbucks and an uncommon item, $9.99 for 250 potbucks and a themed item for the month, and 9.99 for 125 potbucks only (no free gift). They also sometimes, especially during rally events and Canadian and US holidays, offer sales on potbucks, as well as offering player-specific sales upon reaching certain levels. These "player-specific" sales are limited to a 26 hour time span, or until the next level is reached, whichever comes first, so if you want to acquire them you must purchase them as they are offered or they will be forever lost, as they do not "stack".
