Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China is a Combat Flight Simulation developed by Ace Maddox for Microsoft Windows. The game based on the historical events of America’s secret volunteer squadrons that defended China against Japan in the China-Burma-India theatre of World War 2.[8] A Xbox One version was released on 12 January 2018. [9]


Plot

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China Puts players in the Flying Tigers a volunteer squadron that fought were recruited by the Chinese troops to help fight against Japan during World War 2. [10] The game lets players. The game focuses on lesser-known battles and places of the war such as China-Burma-India theatre. The game features missions based on real historical battles such as Battle of the Salween Gorge, Invasion of Malaya, and raids on Rangoon [11] The lets player recreate the intense aerial victories of the Flying Tigers during their most trying and challenging moments. [12]

Gameplay

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China single-player campaign features close to 12 missions with multiple objectives in each one. The objectives vary from bombing runs on enemy airfields, dropping torpedos on ships, or strafing ground targets. [13] A big part of the campaign is shooting and destroying targets. Missions also focus on battle strategy. One mission in the game has the player damaging multiple planes in a Japanese bombing run in order to break up their formation [14]

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China also features several other single-player modes outside of the campaign. Dogfight is a mode focused on air combat. The players choose a plane, location, and a number of enemies to battle against. Dogfight also has a survival mode where the player is forced to face an endless amount of enemies to see how long they can survive. [15]

Free Flight is a mode that allows the player to fly freely with any objectives. [16] In this mode the player can practice controlling the aircraft without worrying about enemies. [17]

Challenge mode Has five missions with specific objectives including survival, capture the flag, and destroying all enemies. [18] Challenge mode also comes with leaderboards so players can compete for best times and highest scores. [19]

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China has a multiplayer allows up to 16 players [20] and has five modes available including Dogfight VS, Team Dogfight, Rocket Match VS, Team Rocket Match and Flagbusters.[21] Dogfight is a free for all deathmatch. Team Dogfight is a team deathmatch. Rocketbattle and Team Rocket Battle are game types that equip each player's plane with rockets and is a one-shot one kill mode. Flagbusters is a capture the flag type of game mode with the aircraft. [22]

Release

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China was officially released on May 29, 2017, on Steam. It also has a deluxe edition available to buy on Steam. The deluxe edition includes the official soundtrack for the game and DLC for the game called Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China - Paradise Island. [23] Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China - Paradise Island includes Two aircraft the Japanese A6M2-N "Rufe" and the US Navy “Seahawk" SC-1. It also includes the Phi Phi Islands map. [24]

On January 12 2018 Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China was officially released on the Xbox Live market place. [25]

Reception

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China received mixed to positive reviews. It has a score of 67 on Metacritic,based on 6 critics.[34] Joe Pepek of Xbox Tavern priased the game's campign saying "Top to bottom the single player campaign alone is worth the price of admission, despite its short length." [35] The game also recived opraised for the amount of content. Andrew Ogley of TrueAchivements said "there's a fair bit of content, and the combat can be intense and challenging."

Flying Tigers: Shadows Over China received some criticism for being too repetitive Carlos Santuana from TheXboxHub claims " the actual missions available – of which there are a decent number – fail to bring any real enjoyment or match that early excitement. Instead they suffer from a rather distinct amount of repetition throughout." [36] Adam Dileva xboxaddict criticized the game's story for being boring saying "While there’s a little variety in the campaign, I do wish it told the stories better. You’ve given a dossier to read before and after the missions, and there’s some brief cutscenes sprinkled in with some voiceover work, but nothing exciting or that will wow you."
