Nnegest Likké (born February 19, 1970) is an American film director, screenwriter and producer.She won the best diaspora award at the 2016 African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for her film Ben and Ara. She is considered to be one of the first women of colour to write and direct a movie distributed by a major Hollywood studios.[1] Her directing credits include Fox Searchlight's romantic-comedy Phat Girlz, and the multi award-winning indie love drama Ben and Ara.

Early life and Education

Nnegest Likké was born February 19, 1970 in Oakland, California.[2] She is half African-American and half Ethiopian, and was raised by a single-mother. She grew up in San Francisco, also known as the Bay Area.

During her childhood, Likké had the opportunity of travelling to Europe, East, West and Islamic North in Africa,[3] along side her mother who Likké referred too as an active globetrotter. This exposed her to various ways of life besides those known in America.[3]

Likké attended Skyline High School. At Clark Atalanta University (CAU), she majored in film and graduated with a BA in Mass Communications.[4]

Career

In 1993, Likké moved to Los Angeles to pursue screenwriting.[5] One of the first gigs that Likké received was being a writer and producer on the reality TV show Blind Date.[5] While in the process of creating, Likké spent years teaching Drama, History and English at a high school in Los Angeles.[6] One of her first successes in the film industry was co-producing and co-hosting her own talk show 'The Trace and Nnegest Show."[6] Inspired by her love of giving advice, this show aired in Los Angeles for 3 years. It was later sold to the Lifetime Network.

Films

Phat Girlz (2006) was Likké's first feature film, starring Academy Award Winner Mo’Nique.[7] This film was about two large women who meet a man of their dreams in an unexpected way.[8] This film went on to earn close to $6.5 million.[9] Her next film was Ben and Ara (2016) starring Monica Calhoun and Jimmy Jean-Louis which was an independent film about an African Muslim woman who falls in love with an agnostic man.[5] Her most recent film is Everything But a Man (2019 ). Likké wrote, directed and produced Everything But a Man, about a single, successful, strong black woman who despite her success in her career, has found it difficult to find love.[10] Recently, Likké is working on an international adoption thriller for Sixth Sense Productions.[11]
