Capterra is an online marketplace vendor serving as an intermediary between buyers and sellers within the software industry.[1] The company assists customers to select software for their needs.

History

The company was founded in 1999 by Michael Ortner and Rakesh Chilakapati. It is based in Arlington, Virginia.[2] The company uses a pay-per-click model[3][4]. Vendors would pay only when a Capterra user clicked through to their website.[5]

After its revenue increased by 633% from 2003 to 2006, Capterra was mentioned in Inc. magazine's 2007 ranking of the 500 fastest-growing private U.S. companies. By the end of 2007[4], there were more than 2 million software buyers and nearly 1,000 software vendors advertised on the website.[5]

In 2009, the site allowed software users to leave reviews.[6][7]

Gartner bought Capterra in September 2015.[8]

In 2018 Capterra conducted a Top Tech trends survey[9] on virtual reality (VR) employee training,[10] how small businesses manage technology investments [11] and consider project management software.[12][13][14]
