Martina Krupičková (Czech pronounced [Kru-pich-kov-ah]) (born 15 September 1975) is a Czech oil on canvas artist.

Early life

Martina Krupičková was born in the Czech town of Světlá nad Sázavou, which is approximately 100 km from Prague, Czech Republic.

In 1990, one year after the Velvet Revolution, Martina commenced Fashion Design and Textile studies at a prestige school in Brno. These studies, lasting four years, improved her design, drawing and painting skills. However, it would be some time before these would be put into practice as the world was opening up to Czechs, who could now travel abroad relatively easily.

After graduating, Martina traveled extensively, including several months in England and the USA. In 1999 Martina returned to Prague and started to paint oil on a black canvas using a palette knife.

Artist Statement

Taken from "https://martinakrupickova.com": My style is always evolving; the strong colour and bold strokes have become slightly softer and more abstract – still playing with light and shadow on a black background. I have always used only a palette knife, not brushes. I like the versatility of the knife – it can both sharpen focus and smooth to abstract. I want the viewer to find new parts to the painting as they adjust their viewpoint, almost like turning the pages of a book. The story starts with only a small amount of background detail, enticing the viewer to delve deeper and discover what lies within.

My paintings draw on personal experiences that are a reflection of the visible – landscapes, cityscapes and transport. My ambition is to achieve the perfect balance between realism and artistic expression – find that pitch point by testing the limits of my contemporary style.''

Notable Activities

Martina Krupičková has since had over 30 exhibitions, including a work in the 2008 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.[1]

Martina was interviewed on Czech Television CT1 Dobre Rano (17 June 2008),[2] and on Czech Television CT1 in the talkshow Všechnopárty (2 June 2009).[3]

Martina's work is regularly featured in prestigious Czech Auction Houses "European Arts", "Galerie Kodl", "Prague Auctions" and others.

In 2018, Martina was chosen as a contestant for the UK Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year television programme (Season 4 Heat 5). A group of selected artists were asked to paint Inveraray Castle on the shore of Loch Fyne in Scotland. The artists have to create their artwork within four hours (interrupted by interviews, camera setups and breaks) and three judges choose the winner. This time lapse video[4] is from the fixed camera that monitored Martina through the creation of her entry.
