Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Wordcount3000 (talk | contribs) at 02:12, 14 December 2006. The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Instructions
Please read these instructions carefully. Failure to do so will result in a rejected request.
  • You must use the template shown below in the gray box. If you do not do this, your request will be ignored. Don't forget to sign your name with four tildes, as indicated. If your username contains spaces, you must use an underscore ("_") in the template, as shown below. Do not add links to your username, just the text.
{{subst:Renameuser|Old Username|New Username|My Very Convincing Reason.}} -- ~~~~
  • Check this page periodically to see whether a bureaucrat has fulfilled your request or whether additional information is required. If the request has been fulfilled, read the "Once fulfilled" section for further instructions; of particular importance is the renaming of your userpages to reflect the name change.
  • Please do not request a rename unless it is necessary. If you have only a few edits, see the alternatives below.
  • The link "change username" points to a restricted tool. Only Bureaucrats can access it. Users without a Bureaucrat access level will get an error message instead.
Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Meithal → J.M. Tavernier

Requesting it here only gets you renamed on this wiki, not on the others. It might be better for you to wait until Single Login if you want to merge all of your accounts. Angela . 11:53, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Au contraire; it would probably speed up the merge process if you've got all your accounts under the same name, with the same email address set in preferences; this allows the first pass to find them and associate them all. 164.11.204.56 08:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Drusisqo → jadakisssss

  • Requested name: jadakisssss (change username)

Not done per above. Warofdreams talk 06:00, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mrnaveed → p3npower

OCCAdmin → OCC01

It was suggested I rename: "Hello! Calling yourself admin is not a good idea as some editors could mistake you for an administrator. You can go to WP:CHU and request a change of username before you are blocked for possible impersonation. Regards, (aeropagitica) 23:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC) I agree. Alternatively, if you really want to keep this username you should put a note on your user page clarifying that you are not a Wikipedia administrator. Wikipedia policy forbids usernames that imply administrative status on Wikipedia. (I'm sure you were unaware of this and didn't intend to mislead anyone.)--Srleffler 02:08, 8 December 2006 (UTC)"

Please rename to "OCC01"

StanVman → stanvman

bennicotera → choosername

Gbambino → Gbambino06

 Done Essjay (Talk) 03:17, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Open poppyseed → Open_sesame

Not done The MediaWiki software does not recognize the underscore as a valid character for usernames; it is a part of URLs to denote a space, so the software does not regard it as anything more than a normal space. There is no difference between "Open sesame" and "Open_sesame"; both are considered the same username, so it is not possible to rename to that name, as it already exists. Essjay (Talk) 03:20, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metal Maiden → Metal Lord

 Done Essjay (Talk) 03:25, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not done You must make your request while logged in as the username that is to be changed, for security purposes. Essjay (Talk) 03:28, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deathrocker → Gold

Not done Username already exists. Essjay (Talk) 03:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't already exist, acording to this. - Deathrocker 05:16, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It does according to this, which has been around since the beginning of Wikipedia, unlike the new user log, which doesn't record accounts created before the extension was written last year. It's confirmed definitively by the renameuser extension, which threw an error when I tried the rename; I can provide a screenshot if you're still skeptical. Codyr345 → WikiCR

  • Current name: Codyr345 (talk contribs)
  • Requested name: WikiCR (change username)
  • Reason: I wish to not have a name with any relation to my real name. I would appreciate it if my privacy was acknowledged.-- Codyr345 02:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Done But, please note, your decision to copy someone else's request, rather than following instructions, almost caused another user to be renamed. In future, please be more careful to follow the instructions as set out. Essjay (Talk) 03:35, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cher is a godess → ILOVEMEJ

Jamesoneal → James_ONeal

  • Current name: Jamesoneal (talk contribs)
  • Requested name: James_ONeal (change username)
  • Reason: When creating my account I did not realize that by adding an underscore to the username that it could produce a space within my username, also the auto formatting of my username during the signup process changed the capitalization of my username. I would like it to display properly including the formatting of the username and when my user page is accessed via my user-page links. Thanks, and sorry for the any troubles caused by this request.

Jnonnemaker → Jon44121

Supsi → Nikita85

  • Current name: Supsi (talk contribs)
  • Requested name: Nikita85 (change username)
  • Reason: I would like to have the same name, or at least close to it, as I do in the Finnish Wikipedia. When I registered I didn't think I would use this account much but that will change now. I also use this name in a public picture gallery and I'm not sure if it was a wise decision to have it elsewhere as well. -- Supsi 18:52, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mjg0503 → Formeruser123

  • Current name: Mjg0503 (talk contribs)
  • Requested name: Formeruser123 (change username)
  • Reason: This is my username from an account I had renamed a little while back. I registered it as a doppelganger account in September, but recently used it for requests on my right to vanish on the new username, since I had forgotten the password. Feel free to check the items in the deletion log to verify this is me. I want to transfer the only contribs on it to a new username to avoid confusion from my early contribs as Mjg0503. Thanks --Mjg0503 21:55, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Srbrown → Wordcount3000

  • Current name: Srbrown (talk contribs)
  • Requested name: Wordcount3000 (change username)
  • Reason: I have made only a few edits, but someone--I think I might know who--went online with my account and did some editing. This has associated the previous username with material I'd rather not be associated with. I hope this can be fixed, and also that I find the culprit and admonish them. Thank you. -- Srbrown 02:25, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wait, someone used your account to make offensive edits, and so you want a username change? You realize that changing username moves all the edits made under the old name to the new name, so that everything in Special:Contributions/Srbrown will move to Special:Contributions/Wordcount3000. Is that what you're wanting to do? Essjay (Talk) 03:27, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't know if the edits would count as "offensive," but they are to entries dealing with topics I prefer not to be associated with--not as per any username, but as per "srbrown" which is too similar to my actual name. I would rather have the edits completely disassociated from me at all, but I don't think that is possible. Is it? If not, I will settle for having the username changed. Thank you for your time. [I didn't know whether you'd look back up the list, so I added this to the bottom here and deleted the earlier request. I apologize if this is wrong.]Srbrown 02:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
