Greg Hates Car Culture is a breakcore album by Canadian musician Aaron Funk, under his primary alias Venetian Snares, originally released in 1999 by Minneapolis-based independent label History of the Future. It was his first official release, his prior releases having been self-released demo tapes which have yet to see widespread release. The tracks on this album were produced in the late 1990's using OctaMED, a tracker program for the Commodore Amiga 500, except for "Aqap", which was produced using the program's PC counterpart. The album was officially re-released for the first time since its original release with bonus tracks on December 6, 2019 on Funk's own label, Timesig.[1]

Songs

The beginning of the song "Personal Discourse" samples a recording of Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares) calling a dominatrix on public-access television.[2] The conversation sampled is difficult to make out due to the prominence of reverb and sound effects at the same time, but it can be inferred [by whom?] that he asked her about the most bizarre scenarios she has experienced. The song has an 11

time signature.

"Like Tooth Decay" was previously released on the 1998 demo tape Subvert! It has a time signature of 21
16
.

"Fuck a Stranger in the Ass" samples the 1998 Coen brothers film The Big Lebowski. The scene in question involves one of the film's characters, Walter Sobchak, smashes another person's car with a crowbar on account of mistaken identity whilst shouting, "Do you see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass?!"

According to Funk, in an interview with Dublab DJ Aura T-09, "Boiled Angel" contains a sample of some of Funk's friends allegedly talking about Boiled Angel, an independent comic book by artist Mike Diana. [3]

"Cricket Spine Bin" and two of the 2019 bonus tracks, "Eating America With Pointed Dentures" and "Punk Kids", were previously released on the 1998 demo tape Spells. Of the latter two, only "Punk Kids" has been heard outside of Funk's circle of friends.[4]"Aqap" is an abbreviation for "as quick as possible", a line which is spoken by a distorted voice in the song.
