Robert Paul Gould, III born December 6, 1982 in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania) is an American football kicker for the Chicago Bears of the NFL. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State University.

High school career

Gould attended Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, and won three letters each in football, soccer, and basketball, and one in track. During the 2000 Boy's Soccer District Championship, Gould scored the game winning goal with seconds left.

Professional Career

Gould was originally signed out of free agency by the New England Patriots during the 2005 NFL preseason. Gould was then waived from the Patriots, and then signed by the Baltimore Ravens, who waived him three weeks later. The Chicago Bears signed Gould out of free agency on October 8, 2005. Gould made the first game winning kick of his entire career against the New Orleans Saints in 2005.

Prior to the tenth week of the 2006 Chicago Bears season, Gould was National Football League's leading scorer. In week 5, Gould broke Kevin Butler's previous Chicago Bears team record for most consecutive perfect kicks to start a season. Through the Bears' first 10 games of the 2006 season, Gould remained perfect, converting all 24 field goals and all 30 extra points that he attempted. He also broke another Butler record on November 12, 2006, against the New York Giants, at which time he made his 25th consecutive field goal (breaking the previous record of 24 straight, set between 1988-1989). However, this streak was broken in the week twelve 2006 game against the New England Patriots, where a 45-yard attempt was blocked. Gould's achievements have not gone unnoticed. He was named NFL Special Teams player of the month for October 2006.

Trivia

  • Gould is good friends with teammate and Bears' punter Brad Maynard [1].
  • Gould is a fan of the Chicago White Sox. [2]
  • Gould has a younger brother, Chris Gould, who is a kicker for the University of Virginia.
