Greg Mortimer is a cruise ship owned and operated by Aurora Expeditions. The ship was named Greg Mortimer in honour of the Aurora Expeditions's founder, in a combined naming and delivery ceremony at CMHI Haimen base on 6 September 2019.

Design and description

The ship is a 104 metre built Expedition ship with a state of the art x-bow design and 80-cabins, which has a pierced effect on smaller waves, making for a smoother voyage.[1]

History

The ship was named after the Australian polar explorer and founder of Aurora Expeditions, Greg Mortimer OAM (born 10 December 1952) who was an Australian mountaineer.[2] Mortimer is most well known as one of the first two Australians (with Tim Macartney-Snape) to successfully climb Mount Everest, on 3 October 1984.[3]

Coronavirus pandemic

On 7 April 2020, the cruise ship which holds up to 216 passengers was stranded in Uruguay for a week and asking for help after people exhibiting symptoms like fever cases which prompted authorities to ban them from disembarking.[4] After the Uruguayan medical teams boarded the cruise ship to test passengers on April 1, 81 people has been tested positive from the Covid-19 with six people being evacuated and transferred into hospital being seriously ill with coronavirus.[5]
