Payback 2 is a Grand Theft Auto clone developed and published by Apex Designs, and is a sequel to Payback.[1] It was released on November 20, 2012 for Android and iOS, and became free to play in 2013.[2][3]

Gameplay

Payback 2 has a story mode, with multiple chapters, in which the you generally do missions for a crime lord, your boss, to obtain enough money to complete the level. You are also able to gain money by destroying things like cars and pedestrians, and there can also be hidden missions. Payback 2 has a campaign mode, also with multiple chapters, where you can play different mini-games against the AI characters. The multiplayer mode features both public and private muliplayer, and there are four public game servers (one for Asia, Europe, Japan and the US) which can each host multiple multiplayer games. There is also a "custom" mode, where you can create your own singleplayer mini-games, and an online "challenges" mode where hourly, daily and weekly challenges are hosted for the players to compete with each other.[4][5]

Development

The original Payback game was released in 2009, and focused on single-player gameplay.[6] In creating the sequel, Payback 2, the team decided to change things up, including dropping the original's game engine in favor of one creating better graphics, and putting a new emphasis in multiplayer gameplay.[7][6]

Reception

When the game was released, TouchArcade praised the game for being a competent Grand Theft Auto clone, but criticized its lack of a story.[8] The game holds a 5.7 star rating on the iOS App Store based on 2.6K ratings, but a slightly less 5.3 star rating on the Google Play Store based on 800K ratings. Slide2Play was less enthusiastic, claiming that the game "still has issues with its basic design. Winning a race is literally as easy as pushing forward...it's hard to target the (other) bad guys in the game’s on-foot shooting mission...Shooting is also made difficult by the fact that everybody on-screen is tiny and seems to blend in with the dull environments."[9] Multiple journalists noted having issues connecting, or finding, people to play with online as well.[9][6]
