John Jeshua Kettler (1659–1718), was Dutch-speaking Kettler who came to Surat for business. He traveled from Surat to Delhi, Agra and Lahore for business. After coming to India, he learned Hindi and wrote Hindustani grammar in Dutch for the people of his country. This Dutch manuscript was copied by a Dutchman named Isaac Van der Hoeve in 1698 AD. It was also translated into Latin by David Mill. The Latin version of this book was published in 1743 AD in Lydon, Holland. A copy of this published book is available in the National Library of Kolkata.[1]

Early Life

His father was a bookbinder and he wanted John to do the same work of bookbinding.[2]
