Chitrasen Sahu(12 October 1992) is an Indian mountaineer,[1] national basketball player, inclusion and disability right activist and motivational speaker. He is India's first double amputee[2]to scale  Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mount Kosciusko (Australia).[3][4][5] He is also a three times national wheelchair basketball player.[6][7]

On 4th June 2014 while travelling on a train, his hands slipped, he fell in between the train and the platform and both of his legs got badly damaged. With help from the RPF personnel present he was admitted to a hospital in Raipur and after 24 days his both legs were amputated.

His is on the quest to climb each of the continents' highest peaks including the Everest and hoist the national flag of India.[8][9]

Early Life and Career

Born in a small village Beloudi of Balod district, Chhattisgarh. His father and mother were a farmer. He has an elder sister and a younger brother. He did schooling from a government school in his village and bachelors degree in civil engineering from government engineering college Bilaspur. He got selected in the air force and was preparing for defence services and other competitive exams before the accident happened in which he lost his both legs.[10]

He, the started participating in marathons, cricket, basketball, and other sports with his daily activities. Chitrasen started his journey by trekking at Mainpat in 2018.

Train Accident

Chitrasen boarded the Amarkantak Express train from Raipur to Bilaspur on 04 June 2014, and the accident happened at Bhatapatra station before Bilaspur junction. On this day he was travelling back from his home, by train. At a station on the way, he got down to get some water. By the time he could buy and get back, the train slowly started moving. He ran for a short distance and tried to board the moving train. Unfortunately, the handle on the door was oiled or greased, he slipped, lost his balance and fell down.

Initially, police suspected that he was either attempting suicide or met with an accident while crossing the railway tracks. When he was not able to convince, the flagman of the train came forward and explained the incident in detail. It was then he was taken to the hospital where his one leg got amputated immediately and twenty-four days later, his second leg too got amputated, due to medical negligence.

Mountaineering

He started with small treks and self-training. No training institute was willing to enrol him, as they were not willing to take a risk. But with time, and a bit of easing in the rules, he was able to get trained and started with professional mountaineering. He soon was scaling a few ranges in Chhattisgarh and also in the Himalayas.

He then met Rahul Gupta, an experienced mountaineer from Chattisgarh, who helped Chitrasen to plan for the bigger conquests.

Chitrasen Sahu started his 7 Summit plan by starting with Mount Kilimanjaro. The training took over a year with practice on different trekking locations. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, is located in Tanzania. It is one of the world’s most popular trekking area for professional Mountaineers. It was six days of treacherous trek and temperature of -10 to -15 degree conditions in which Chitrasen Sahu reached the summit on September 23 2019.[11]

Next on his list was Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak in Australia. This peak was conquered by Chitrasen Sahu on 2nd March 2020. No other double amputee from India had scaled these peaks.

Another adventurous experience on his list was skydiving from a height of 14000 feet which no double amputee mountaineer had achieved from this height.

Mission Inclusion

While facing his own challenges, Chitrasen realized the need for accessibility, inclusion, and counselling of the disabled people. He realized that not many were aware of their abilities and strengths. He was instrumental in arranging assistive devices to hundreds of such people and has counselled thousands.[12]

He also faced challanges in getting a licence for a car which he had purchased and modified. He had to go through legal procedures before getting a judgement from the high court of Bilaspur which was in his favour and it opened the gates for many people with disabilities to own a motor vehicle license.

Through his "Mission Inclusion", [13] he wants to reach out to both - the society and the people with disabilities. As he said in an interview, "All Focus is on to make everyone understand that it is not sympathy which is needed, but rather heartfelt empathy to understand and create an accessible and inclusive environment."
