2014 Karvachar attack (Armenian: Դիվերսիա Քարվաճառում, Sabotage in Karvachar, Azerbaijani: Kəlbəcərdə girov götürülməsi, Hostage taking in Kəlbəcər) was multiday terrorist attack by 3 Azerbaijanis which took place in Karvachar, Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (de facto)/Kəlbəcər, Azerbaijan (de jure) and surrounding area in July, 2014.[1][2][3] On the first days of July three ethnic Azerbaijanis - Dilqəm Əsgərov (holding Russian citizenship)[4], Şahbaz Quliyev, Həsən Həsənov have secretly entered the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.[5] The three kidnapped 17-years-old Armenian shepherd Smbat Tsakanyan in Chumen village whom they later killed.[6]

On July 8, after being revealed in the town of Karvachar (Kəlbəcər) the group started a skirmish with local police which ended with the arrest of Şahbaz Quliyev and the other two fleeing the scene.[6] On July 11, while trying to escape back to Azerbaijan Həsən Həsənov has attacked the civilian Lada Niva driven by off duty army major Sargis Abrahamyan. During the encounter the 42-year-old major was killed and his friend's wife 37-year-old Karine Davtyan was shot in her eye. Həsənov hijacked the car but was shot dead in the firefight with border guards near the Armenian border.[2][6] Davtyan was later transferred to the hospital and recovered. After losing members of his group Dilqəm Əsgərov was arrested by local police tactical units on July 14.[6]

All the three members of the group were carrying assault rifles and pistols with silencers, ammunition and hand grenades.[1][6] Video published by Armenian Public Television shows reconnaissance data collected by the group.[7]. Forensic examination showed their hostage Smbat Tsakanyan was shot with the assault rifle carried by Dilqəm Əsgərov.[8]

The trial over surviving members of the group took place in Stepanakert (Xankəndi) on October 27, 2014. Dilqəm Əsgərov was sentenced to life imprisonment and Şahbaz Quliyev to 22 years in prison.[2] Azerbaijan is officially denying the charges.[9]

The abolition of the armed group has led to Armenian–Azerbaijani clashes in July-August 2014.[10]
