Mariam Saab is a Lebanese-Australian journalist and television presenter. She is currently a late night anchor on ABC News (Australia).

Background

Saab was born on the 8th November 1985, in Sydney, New South Wales in a Lebanese-Australian family. Her mother is Majida Abboud-Saab, who migrated to Australia from Beirut in 1967 and became a TV producer.[1][2] She grew up in the Sutherland Shire and attended Illawong Public Primary School followed by The McDonald College performing arts high school. Saab divides her time between Australia, France and Lebanon.

Career

Fresh out of high school, Saab began her career at SBS radio as a host and producer for Alchemy.[3] Later, during a stint in the Middle East, Saab was a journalist for the Lebanese Daily Star newspaper from 2008–2009.[4] Her work included identification of continued poverty in the country, and was reported in policy briefings.[5] In 2009 she began reporting for the Australian SBS, following in the footsteps of her mother, a former executive producer for Arabic language programs at SBS and widely regarded as having put the world's first dedicated multicultural public television channel to air.[6]

From c.2014-2018, Saab lived in Paris, where she was an English-language presenter for France 24, a global French-government-owned TV channel. She frequently appeared as a music critic, and reported on music trends from destinations including Tripoli and Beirut.[7][8] In 2017 she interviewed Australian music icon Paul Kelly in Paris.[9]

Since 2019, Saab has presented for Australia's national ABC News channel, appearing as a late night anchor[10]. She covered the worst of the 2019-20 bushfire season. Her work has also appeared on various ABC digital platforms.[11]

In September 2020, Saab featured in the Australian edition of marie claire, commenting alongside a diverse group of high profile Australians about their hopes and dreams for the Australian nation and its growing need for change when it comes to much of the country's cultural, social and environmental framework.[12]

Personal

Saab is married to Franco-Lebanese musician Rami Khalifé.[13] The couple met when she interviewed him for SBS broadcasting during a music tour in Australia in 2009.[14] They have two children, Gabriel (b.2012 in Beirut) and Ava (b.2015 in Paris). Saab is praised for her fashion sense on screen.[15] She does not maintain a social media or internet presence.
