Rabiya Occeña Sundall Mateo[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] (born January 11, 1996) is an Indian Filipino[7] model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2020. She will represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2020 competition.[23].[11]

Early life and education

Mateo was born by domestic partnership, to an Indian-American (Indian race and american citizen) father and a Filipino mother, who later separated.[24] According to Mateo, she grew up in poverty.[19] She attended Iloilo Doctors' College as Bachelor of Science in physical therapist[25][26] and graduated cum laude. Mateo is working in SRG Manila Review Center as a lecturer and review coordinator.[27][28]

Miss Universe Philippines

She represented Iloilo City at the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 after she won Miss Iloilo Universe 2020 at West Visayas State University Cultural Center.[29]

In the Question and Answer segment of the national pageant, each candidate in the Top 5 finalist was asked two questions. KC Montero asked Mateo the first question, "If you can create a new paper currency with the image of any Filipino on it, dead or alive, who would it be and why?". She responded:

If I were given the chance, I want to use the face of Miriam Defensor Santiago. For those who don’t know, she was an Ilongga. But what I admired about her is that she used her knowledge, her voice to serve the country. I want to be somebody like her - somebody who puts her heart, her passion into action. After all, she is the best President that we never had.

Montero asked Mateo a final question which is the same to other Top 5 finalists, "This pandemic has made clear our priorities, essential or non-essential. Where do pageants stand in this time of crisis?". She answered:

As a candidate, I know I am not just a face of Iloilo City but I am here carrying hope and as a symbol of light in the darkest of times. As of the moment, I want to help my community. I want to use my strength to make an impact. And that is the essence of beauty pageant. It gives us the power to make a difference.[30]

Mateo was crowned by the outgoing Miss Universe Philippines, Gazini Christiana Jordi Acopiado Ganados as Miss Universe Philippines 2020 along with different minor awards.[31]
