difference from usb

Okay, so it's very muddy for me from this article. So what is exactly the difference or similarity between usb-3 and thunderbolt? Are they compatible, does one contain the other etc? Other articles on the net mention that USB devices can be connected to Thunderbolt , maybe with exception of some higher powered stuff. Even the official webpage is a bit funny, saying " Simply put, Thunderbolt 3 delivers the best USB-C" - which doesn't really show that it's a separate technology, just one that is compatible to a certain degree.
