Vivien Keszthelyi, born on 7 December in Debrecen[1], is a three-time touring car champion, the member of Audi Sport Racing Academy. She is the youngest ever female racecar driver to finish the season with podium in the history of GT4 championships.

Keszthelyi started her professional career in the FIA Swift Cup Europe[2] series in 2014. As a result of 2 successful seasons spent there, since the fall of 2015 she has been the only and youngest ever female member of Audi Sport Racing Academy, which makes her the first pilot with manufacturer ties in the history of Hungarian motorsport.[3][4] In 2016 she won her first titles behind the wheel of an Audi TT in the FIA Central European Zone touring car championship where, at the age of 15, she became a Hungarian champion in both sprint (short-distance) and endurance (long-distance) categories.[5][6]

In 2017 Vivien placed second on the absolute league table of the Audi Sport TT Cup series becoming the youngest ever international female pilot who could make it to the podium at the end of the season throughout the history of GT championships.[7][8] In 2018 apart from her Rookie (junior) champion title in the Audi Sport Seyffarth R8 LMS GT Cup, with her silver medal on the absolute league table she got to be the youngest women racecar driver to close the season with podium finish in the history of the international GT4 championships.[9][10] In 2019 she raced in the F3 Asian Championship Winter Series certified by FIA, she also competed in the restarted W Series. Thanks to her achievements during the year, she happened to be the most successful pilot in the category concerning points collected in her first Formula 3 season in the history of Hungarian motorsport.[11][12]

Career

Vivien has been interested in cars since she was 4. As she admits she preferred playing with electric jeeps to dolls. She was 12 when she first saw a live race at the Red Bull Ring. It happened then and there that she made up her mind to get into car racing.[13] Being exceptionally talented as well as determined and consistent, she could easily cope with competing in the adult field despite her young age.[1]

2014: Special license

Due to her young age she was allowed to race in the FIA Swift Cup Europe Series only with a special license.[14] She finished in third place in the junior category, and in sixth place in the absolute final adult grid.[15] Seeing her outstanding achievements, the promoter of Swift Cup Austria invited her to one run in the Austrian Series as the only Hungarian pilot. She reached the excellent 4th place in the adult male grid proving her undoubted gift for race car driving.[16]

2015: On the road to development

In her second season in the FIA Swift Cup Europe Keszthelyi finished absolute 3rd , 2nd in the junor and 1st in the women category.[17]

2016: Two- time Hungarian adult touring car champion

Audi Sport Racing Academy, established this very year, wished to utilize her potential. After the successful tests in Germany she was chosen as the only woman to be one of the three academists in the talent development program promoted by Audi Sport with factory support. This was a giant leap in her career and from the age of 15 she carried on as the first factory-trained pilot of Hungarian motorsport.[3][18][19]

After shifting category she left behind the car of her earlier successes and got behind the wheel of a 350-horsepower Audi TT to compete in the FIA Central European Zone.[20][21] It didn’t take her too long to make it, she finished 1st in both sprint (short-distance) and endurance (long-distance) categories at the end of her very first season, and she could be proud of being a two-time Hungarian champion at the age of 15.[22]

At the closing weekend of the season in the 60th race in her career, Keszthelyi hit the podium the 60th time with her 25th title.[23]

2017: The youngest Hungarian scorer in the international series

In 2017 she went on to race in the Audi Sport TT Cup Series, where she had the chance for the first time to experience the „body to body” or rather „car to car” acute competition between equalised cars.[24] Throughout the season she managed to accomplish 7 out of 14 runs due to circumstances beyond her control such as accidents, penalty resulting from communicational failure.[25][26] Despite all this, she earned 65 points and finished 13th in the championship, which makes her the youngest scorer in international series in the history of Hungarian motorsport.[27][28][29][30][31]

2018: The youngest ever on the podium in GT4

She raced in the Audi Sport Seyffarth R8 LMS GT Cup in the season of 2018. Driving a rear-wheel-drive racing car for the first time in a race was a unique experience to her. This was also a huge step up as this GT4 V10 car with a 5200 cc and 500 horsepower engine was much more powerful than her previous ones.[10][32][33]

She achieved a title in the Rookie category by performing an amazing overtaking in the last lap of the last run of the season, and was a silver medalist in the absolute category. This performance made her the youngest female pilot of all time who finished on the podium at the end of the season in the international GT4 category.[34][35]

2019: Formula 3 Asian Championship

It was announced officially on 2 January 2019 that Keszthelyi was going to compete as the racing driver of BlackArts Racing and her debut was to be in the F3 Asian Championship certified by FIA. By racing in the Asian Championship she became the youngest as well as the only women pilot in the history of Hungarian motorsport who made it to the international Formula 3 category within a full season.[36][37][38] In her very first Formula 3 series she succeeded in gaining points in 5 out of 9 races, 13 points in total, placing 13th. She came to be the youngest, what’s more the most successful Hungarian racecar driver in this category.[39][12][40]

F3 W Series

To participate in the F3 W Series championship designed exclusively for women pilots, 18 racers were selected out of 100. After two rounds Keszthelyi got to Top 28. The last qualifying sesssion took place at the end of April, after which the names of those who earned their place at the grid were published by the Series. As it turned out the 18-year-old Hungarian pilot was going to pursue her career as the official, contracted test-pilot and a backup racing driver of the series in the 2019 season becoming one of the youngest pilot of the grid.[41][42]

First she could be a starter in Circuit Zolder due to Emma Kimilӓinen’s injury but unfortunately, her car was hit in the second lap therefore she needed to retire from the race.[43][44] In her second run in Misano, however, she finished 10th scoring her first point.[45][46] In the last run of the season, in Brands Hatch Circuit, she could toe the line again. Starting from 17th position she finally managed to place 14th.[47][48] She finished 17th on the table.[49]

Her results in the season of 2019 along with her points gained in the first F3 season turned her into the most efficient pilot in the category in the history of Hungarian motorsport.[50]

On 6th August 2020 Carlin Motorsport signed a three-year cooperation agreement with Keszthelyi.[51]

Outside the track

Since the beginning of her career she has always kept charitable causes in mind, gradually becoming more actively involved in social issues:

  • she was chosen as the Champion of UNICEF[52]
  • and the sports-ambassador of Mosoly Alapítvány (Foundation).[53]

She is an active member of Dare to Be Different which is a worldwide movement initiated by Susie Wolff, the wife of Toto Wolff, the Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes Team. The aim of the movement is to use every possible means and program to promote those young ladies who envision themselves either as pilots, race-engineers or team principals in motorsport in the future.[54][55]

In December 2017 she began to obtain PPL (Private Pilot License) that is obligatory to fly a helicopter. She might become the youngest helicopter pilot in the history of Hungarian Aviation.[56]

In October 2018 the Hungarian Branch of UNICEF announced at a high profile press event that Vivien Keszthelyi was picked as the Champion of UNICEF. As the Champion of UNICEF she would like to emphasize the importance of reducing infant mortality rate and supporting infant immunisation.[57][58][59]

Written about her

According to Egon Burkus, the promoter of Swift Cup Europe Vivien was already a mature and talented pilot at the age of 13.[60]

„The young girl’s highest priority is her passion for driving, which has its results……Vivien is an absolute pro, nothing can keep her away from motorsport, not even having got injured in races.”[61]

„She has made men pilots respect her. However, the ambitious teen cannot be satisfied with it, her goal is to be the fastest in the world.”[62]

„Vivien Keszthelyi, at the age of 15, is one of the best Hungarian race-car drivers.”[63]

„A wonderteen”[64]

„Vivien’s been the greatest surprise to me, despite being only 16 she is incredibly smart and calm. She can perfectly control her Audi TT Cup car.”[65]
