Nithyananda (also called Paramahamsa Nithyananda; born A. Rajasekaran, 1 January 1978) is a Hindu godman. He is the founder of the trust Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, which has temples, gurukulas, and ashrams in many countries. Accused in Indian courts of rape, Nithyananda has absconded since 2019. He is said to have fled India and founded his own self-proclaimed island nation, Kailaasa.

Early life

Nithyananda was born A. Rajasekaran,[2][3] in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, to father Arunachalam and mother Lokanayaki.[3]

Sources conflict as to his birth date – a 2003 US visa gave a date of 13 March 1977, while a sworn affidavit as to a 2010 Karnataka High Court case mentioned 1 January 1978.[3]

He was under the direct tutelage of many spiritual and yogic teachers including Yogi Ramsuratkumar[4][5] who taught him bhakti yoga and Mata Vibhutananda Puri under whom he was initiated into the worship of Shri Vidya. He also trained with Isakki Swamigal under whom he mastered the science of Vedanta and the Siddha tradition and with Yogiraj Yogananda Puri (also known as Raghupati Yogi) under whom he mastered the arts of Shashtanga Yoga and yogic powers.[6]

Recognition

Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, a religious organisation founded by Nithyananda, hosts cultural events in United States as well as India.[7][1][8] They hold two Guinness world records, one for the largest rope yoga class[9] and one for the largest pole yoga (mallakhamba) class.[10]

In February 2013, the title of Mahamandaleshwar was conferred on Nithyananda in a closed ceremony by the Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara.[11][12]

In 2012, Nithyananda was recognized as one of the '100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People' by Watkins' Mind Body Spirit Magazine.[13]

In 2012, Nithyananda was appointed the 293rd pontiff of Madurai Aadheenam.[14][15][16]

Controversies and sexual assault allegations

Alleged sexual activities

In 2010, Sun TV reported of video recordings that showed Nithyananda and two women, including actress Ranjitha (who was one of his followers), in a bedroom. The story became viral among news media in Tamil Nadu.[17] Nithyananda's ex-driver Lenin Karuppan admitted to filming them clandestinely,[18]

Nithyananda and Ranjitha claimed the video to be fabricated and accused Sun TV of extortion.[19] A Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Bengaluru confirmed that Nithyananda and Ranjitha were the two people shown in the tape.[20]

Ranjitha filed a complaint with High Court of Karnataka against news channels.[21][22] Channels were ordered to apologize to Ranjitha upon acknowledging the content was morphed.[23][24][25][26][27][28]

Pseudoscience

Nithyananda's speeches have gathered widespread mixed reception in the Indian press, having broadcast a range of pseudoscientific claims, including that he delayed the sunrise for 40 minutes, that he could cause cattle speak in Tamil and Sanskrit, and that he could disprove the correctness of the mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35]

He has claimed to have discovered over 400 esoteric powers expressible by humans and alleges having initiated his disciples into 60 such powers[36] including kundalini and third-eye awakening.[37][38][39] He has since asserted he would open the third eye, for anyone, free of charge by 2021.[40] He also claimed that person would be able to see through smog and walls.[40] Disciples of Nithyananda claim that he gave initiations through 'third eye' to a class of 82 blind children[41], thus curing them of blindness. Rationalist professor and activist Narendra Nayak had challenged Nithyananda to prove his initiation of third eye and subsequent benefits thereof.[42]

Nithyananda has also claimed he and his followers were able to perform paranormal phenomena like extrasensory perception,[43][44][45] materialisation, body scanning,[38] remote viewing, and ability to find lost objects.[46]

Alleged rape

In 2010, a female disciple (US citizen) of Nithyananda accused him of raping her in US and India for close to five years.[47] She filed a complaint with Ann Harbor, Michigan Police, and police didn't commence any formal investigation.[48] In turn Nithyananda sued her in US for defamation caused by her false rape accusation, for which she was penalized USD 463,211.25 by a default judgement in 2014.[48][49] She also filed a complaint with Karnataka Police in India. On 19 February 2018, the Third Additional District and Sessions Court in Ramanagara ordered the framing of charges against Nithyananda and five others in relation to the case. Criminal revision petitions by the accused were dismissed in the Karnataka High Court on 16 May 2018.[50] An appeal against the High Court decision in the Supreme Court of India, in which all of the accused pleaded not guilty (except for one who was absent from court), was dismissed on 1 June 2018, following which charges were framed in the Ramanagara court on 4 June.[51][52]

Disappearance

On 20 November 2019, the Gujarat Police claimed that Nithyananda fled India after choosing not to attend several court hearings.[53]

According to news reports published on December 4, 2019, Nithyananda, after fleeing India, went on to buy a private island near Trinidad and Tobago or Ecuador and founded a micronation he calls Kailaasa. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad police alleged that he could be shuffling between Ecuador and Trinidad and Tobago, while news reports said that he may have gone to Ecuador because the country does not have an extradition treaty with India.[54]

In December 2019, the embassy of Ecuador said that it “categorically denies the statement wherever published that Nithyananda was given asylum by Ecuador or has been helped by the Government of Ecuador in purchasing any land or island in South America”[55] but has confirmed Nithyananda had reached Ecuador after he left India, then left soon after his request for international personal protection (refuge) was denied.

The micronation founded by him was named Kailaasa and claims to issue passports and other documents.[56] In August 2020, Nithyananda launched the ‘Reserve Bank of Kailasa’ on Ganesha Chaturthi, and released its official gold currency, ‘Kailashian dollars’.[57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66] Nithyananda has claimed that the purpose of Kailasa is protection of dispossessed people who lost the right to practice Hinduism authentically in their own countries[60].

Nithyananda has cited several instances of mob lynching attacks and attempts made to assassinate him, and claims he was forced to withdraw himself from the Indian society in order to protect himself.[67][60][68]
