Ambo or ambos can mean any of the folowing:
- Ambo (pulpit)
- Ambo, Ethiopia
- Kom Ombo
- ambulance
- Ambo (band)
- Huttons Ambo, a village (or, rather, two) villages in Yorkshire - High Hutton and Low Hutton, near Malton. (It is worth mentioning that "Ambo" in this context means "together".)
- Lillings Ambo, the villages of East and West Lilling to the south of Sheriff Hutton, in Yorkshire
The original Greek meaning of ambo was
- One of the two raised stands in early Christian churches from which parts of the service were chanted or read.
Ambo now has two meanings, viz. 'together' or 'both', and 'raised'
In Spanish, 'ambos' means "both" (maybe otehr langauges as well)
... as in 'ambidextrous' and probably lots of other words I've never heard of. (Does anyone know an internet source for a dictionary in alphabetical order, so I could browse all the "amb...."s?
