The British Association of Urological Nurses (BAUN) is a professional association based in the United Kingdom which exists to enhance all elements of urological care..[1] by promoting the highest standards of nursing practice. As a UK registered charity[2] BAUN's executive affairs are governed by an elected board[3] of working urology nurses for the benefit of all healthcare professionals with a urological interest[4]. Full association members must be NMC registered nurses[5] but the organisation also welcomes all other global healthcare professionals[6] with a urological interest who may join as associate members[7]

History

BAUN was founded in 1992 by Sarah Heatley, a urology nurse who identified the need to promote advancement in urological nursing and support the personal and professional development of urology nurses[8]. The original iteration of the group held the title "The British Urology Research Nurse Support Group" (BURNS). This formative organisation then evolved into the general association in April 1995 when BAUN as it is known today was created.[9]

Initially, BAUN Meetings were held as supplementary gatherings at the BAUS[10] annual conference with secondary independent meetings taking place later in the year. The first annual BAUN conference took place in 2001. Pre-conference, one day educational workshops focusing on skills development in sub-specialty clinical activities such as flexible cystoscopy and prostate biopsy were introduced in subsequent years.[11]

Organisation

As a registered charity, BAUN is answerable to the charity commission and is also required to follow standard charitable trust governance protocols. The Trustee board comprises of 11 full members elected into post by those members of the association who are eligible to vote in the regular electi9ons. It is a stated aim of the association that representation from all four countries within Great Britain is reflected within the executive[12]. The executive officers comprise of the role of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer and all members of the Trustee board are eligible to stand for appointment to any of these positions when a vacancy arises. All trustee members hold corporate responsibility and as such are registered with companies house. Each trustee serves a term of office of three years after which they may stand for election again for a further period of three years. Once a six year period of tenure has been served the trustee must stand for a further three year period before standing for election once more.

Aims

  • Improve the care of urological patients in all healthcare settings[13]
  • Provide educational opportunities including study days and conference[14]
  • Provide educational materials including best practice guidelines[15]
  • Provide networking[16], professional and personal development opportunities for BAUN members[14]
  • Influence the national healthcare agenda and work collaboratively with other organisations including other charities to the benefit of patients[17][18]
