The 2009 Alabama spree killing occurred on March 10, 2009. The event spanned at least two communities, those of Geneva and Samson in Geneva County, Alabama, United States, and resulted in the death of eleven people, including the gunman.[3] The victims included members of the suspect's family; he also burned down his own mother's house in the town of Kinston, Alabama.[4] The suspect was shot and killed, though it was initially unclear whether the shot was self-inflicted.[5] Later reports said he took his own life.[6]
Sequence of events
The attacks started at a gas station in Samson, and later five people were killed in a trailer park. More people were shot in a shop in Geneva, and the suspect is also said to have fired at cars on the highway. Law enforcement officers at one point used the PIT maneuver on the suspect's car, and he died in a shoot-out in a Geneva metal products plant. During the shoot-out, Geneva police chief Frankie Lindsey was shot in the arm.[7] Several people were also injured.[8]
Victims
The ages of the victims ranged from 18 months to 74 years of age.[9] Among the victims were the wife and child of a deputy sheriff. According to a local police officer:[10]
Five were killed in a trailer in Samson. Two more died in the Big and Little Store in Geneva. The suspect died in the Reliable store in Geneva. It is uncertain whether he killed himself or was killed by one of the sheriffs. He shot at several vehicles on the highway and then he shot at Wal-Mart and Piggly Wiggly in Geneva.
Perpetrator
Police believe that the perpetrator, Michael McLendon, killed at least eleven people including himself during the spree, shot other family members and strangers, as well as burning his own mother in her house. The killings took place in Coffee and Geneva counties, and ended with McLendon's suicide.[11][12] Detectives have discovered a hit list in his home targeting several corporations.[13]
