Beartooth is an American hardcore punk band from Columbus, Ohio, formed in 2012 by Caleb Shomo after he left Attack Attack!. The band is signed to Red Bull Records and is managed by The Artery Foundation since 2013 along with Shomo's electronic act, CLASS. Shomo sung, produced, and played all instruments on their first release, recruiting the other members of the band later. The band's debut album Disgusting was released on June 10, 2014.

History

2012-14: Formation, Red Bull Records and Sick

Beartooth's official logo used since their formation.

Caleb Shomo began writing Beartooth songs while he was still in Attack Attack! as "a different musical outlet" and stated that the band originally "started as a joke band" with members of My Ticket Home. The band was originally called 'Noise', but was switched to Beartooth upon realization the name was already taken.[2]

Beartooth's first songs “I Have a Problem”, "Set Me On Fire", and "Pick Your Poison" were released online in January 2013.[3] After uploading a live music video for “I Have a Problem,”[4] Beartooth announced a string of one-off dates that brought them right into fans living rooms, mostly in the Midwest, following the buzz surrounding the band's live performance in the "I Have a Problem" live video.[5] They played a date on the 2013 Van's Warped Tour,[5] and featured on the entire 2014 tour.[6]

On June 7, 2013, Shomo announced that Beartooth was now signed to Red Bull Records.[7] They released their debut EP Sick for free on their website on July 26, 2013, featuring the songs "I Have a Problem", "Go Be the Voice", "Pick Your Poison", and "Set Me On Fire".[8] On August 17, 2013, the band released a video for "I Have a Problem", not to be confused with the earlier live version.[9] On December 18, 2013 the band were confirmed for the Warped Tour 2014.[10] On November 14, the band released a music video for the song "Go Be The Voice".[11]

2014-present: Disgusting and Nick Reeds departure

On January 6, 2014, Beartooth welcomed Kamron Bradbury as an official new member of the band.[12] In early 2014, Nick Reed stopped touring with Beartooth and left on good terms and was replaced with Oshie Bichar, formerly of City Lights and started touring with Beartooth as their new bassist during their tour with Memphis May Fire throughout February and March across the US.[13]

On April 29, 2014 the band released a live music video for their new song, "Dead" set to appear on their forthcoming album, Disgusting.[14] On May 13, 2014 the band's Facebook page announced the release date for their debut album, Disgusting, as June 10, 2014, along with its track listing.[15] The band released their first single of the album on the same day, titled 'Beaten In Lips', along with its music video.[16] The album was available to stream online a day before its release.[17]

The band participated in the Warped Tour 2014 throughout July to early August in order to promote their debut album.[18] In Europe they embarked on their first headlining tour while it was also announced that they would tour as support to Pierce The Veil and Sleeping With Sirens.[19][20] In August it was announced that they would also be headlining in their first ever North America tour throughout October with support acts Vanna, Sirens & Sailors, Sylar and Alive Like Me.[21]

Musical style

The band have been labeled as a hardcore punk band across both their albums (Sick EP & Disgusting) but have also been said to carry influences of metalcore, possibly derived from Shomo's previous band Attack Attack!, renowned for their metalcore theme although Shomo decided to abandon the electronic elements.[22][23][24][25] The band is also known for their pop influences as noted by critics.[24][26] Caleb Shomo himself was named one of Altpress magazine's 15 best screamers in metalcore as of February 2014, of which he stated that the band's motive was "...to make fun, punk-rock, hardcore, wild music, play crazy shows and have a good time without any pressure from anything."[3]
