CBS Records International was the international arm of the Columbia Records unit of CBS that was formed in 1961 and launched in 1962.[1][2] Columbia Records had been using other record companies such as Philips Records in Europe to distribute Columbia recordings outside North America.

Formation

In 1960, CBS acquired the Australian Record Company[3] and with it its flagship label Coronet Records. The label was renamed CBS Coronet Records and became the distributor for Columbia Records for Australia. That same year, CBS began negotiations with its European distributor Philips Records with the goal of the establishment of a CBS label in Europe. Philips' acquisition of Mercury Records paved the way for the formation of the CBS Records label in 1961 with Philips distributing the first batch of CBS label recordings in Europe in 1962.

Columbia trade mark ownership issues

The use of the CBS Records name was necessary because EMI owned another record label called Columbia, which operated in every market except North America, Spain and Japan.

Expansion

In 1964, CBS acquired Oriole Records which gave CBS Records International its own distribution in the UK beginning in 1965.[4] Initially, only American Columbia product was distributed to go alongside Oriole's own roster on the renamed CBS label. EMI, which had distributed American Columbia recordings on their record label of the same name until the Philips deal in 1951, continued to distribute CBS' other American labels such as Epic Records and Okeh Records on EMI's Columbia label. The distribution deal with EMI expired in 1968 at which point CBS began distributing all their labels directly.[5]

1966 reorganization

In 1966, in a reorganization, it became a subsidiary of the newly formed CBS–Columbia Group.[6][7] CBS Records produced and marketed the output of the labels Columbia Records, Epic Records, Date Records, Okeh Records, and Harmony Records.[7]

Sale to Sony

CBS sold the record company in 1988 to Sony Corporation of America for $US 2 billion.[8] In 1991, the CBS Records company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment. The CBS Records label was renamed Columbia Records after Sony acquired the Columbia name and trade marks from EMI.[9]
