The Cameron Peak fire is a wildfire in the Rocky Mountains west of Fort Collins in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The fire started on August 13, 2020, near Chambers Lake, and the cause is still unknown.[2] On October 14, it became the largest recorded wildfire in Colorado's history, surpassing the Pine Gulch Fire, which had earned the title seven weeks prior.[3][4] As of October 27, 2020, the fire has burned a total of 208,663 acres (84,443 ha) and is 64% contained.[5]
Events
August
The Cameron Peak fire was first reported on August 13th, 2020 in Roosevelt National Forest northwest of Chambers Lake, this led to closure of the Highway 14 from Rustic to Gould, the fire crossed to the south side of Highway 14.[6], the fire spread rapidly and grew to 10,867 acres on August 16th, 2020, fueled by hot and dry weather and steep terrain.[7]
October
In mid-October, the fire grew rapidly due to high winds and continued dry conditions. From late October 13 through early October 14, the fire grew by more than 30,000 acres (120 km2), becoming the largest wildfire in Colorado's history.[8] On October 16, another high wind event caused "extreme fire activity", resulting in firefighting crews being pulled back and additional evacuations being ordered.[9][10][11]
