A World Away is Harriet Chung's debut album, released on January 13, 2023. It is an album of 8 songs written and produced by George Chiang. The album is named after and features a newly arranged version of "A World Away" from Chiang's musical Golden Lotus, titled "A World Away (Remix)."
Chung has received critical praise and numerous awards for the songs and music videos from the album, culminating in her 2023 award for Best Artist of the Future at the World Class Film Awards in Mexico City.[1]
A Deluxe Edition of the album titled A World Away (Deluxe Edition) was released on December 1, 2023, and contains two additional tracks, A World Away (Radio Edit) and A World Away (Acoustic).
Origins
"A World Away (Remix)" is a newly arranged version of the signature pop ballad from George Chiang's musical Golden Lotus. The song was recorded with a full orchestra in Toronto and released as a single on August 25, 2020. The song, about missing the person you love was recorded to further promote Chiang's Golden Lotus. "A World Away (Remix)" received critical praise for Chung's vocal and instrumental performance.[2] The song won the Gold Award for Original Song at the Hollywood Gold Awards.[3]
Its music video captured 11 Best Music Video Awards including the Amsterdam International Film Festival, Canadian Cinematography Awards, Sweden Film Awards, World Distribution Award and the Rome Movie Awards.[4][5][6][7] The success of the single and music video prompted Chung and Chiang to collaborate to record an album.[8]
Singles
George Chiang wrote the remainder of the songs for the album and collaborated with Chung to write "Place for Dreams." Other tracks released as singles before the release of the album include "Today and Tomorrow," "Old Montreal," "The Place for Dreams,""Through My Tears," and "Vancouver."
On April 26, 2022, "Vancouver" was the second single released and featured an arrangement by Warren Robert who also played guitar and bass, Christopher Siu on piano, Grammy-award winning Randy Cooke on drums, and Rique Franks on background vocals. “The song is about a road trip across Canada that ends in Vancouver,” Chung explains. “Having lived there in the past, the song is about my love for the city." Critics praised the song as "majestic" and applauded its beautiful vocal layers, piano progressions, delicate strings, soaring guitar work, and impressive guitar solo. A lyric video for the song was also released.[9] [10]
"Through My Tears" was released on June 17, 2022. The song was critically praised for Chung's "angelic singing, " accompanied by Christopher Siu's arrangement and piano and Mailynn Jenkins's "beautiful flute." The song is about the aching bitter-sweetness of missing your loved one and refers to a Chinese folktale about the Cowherd and Weaving Girl. “The Weaving Girl was forced back to heaven by her mother, and the cowherd remained on earth,” Chung said. “Their love was so strong that they remained faithful to each other for eternity. And once a year, they appear in the night sky as the stars Vega and Altair.” Those stars form a bridge we know as the Milky Way. “Together, they form a bridge to reunite and dance the night away until they are forced to disappear with the rising of the sun,” she said. A lyric video for the song was also released.[11]
"The Place For Dreams" was released on August 19, 2022. Chung co-wrote the song with George Chiang. “The song is a passionate confession about an ill-fated romance,” explains Chung. “It takes you on a passionate ride to infamy.” Chung's passionate vocal delivery, propelled by Warren Robert's flamenco-styled arrangement and guitar, was praised.[12][13]
The song's music video, directed by Theresa Kowall-Shipp and produced by George Chiang portrays Chung dancing with a male partner in a fiery and passionate dance. The music video won several Best Music Video Awards including the Europe Film Festival, Dubai Festival and the Golden Lion International Film Festival.[14][15]
"Old Montreal" was released on November 4, 2022. The song is a stark contrast to her earlier singles. The song was praised as a "wistful pop ballad carries a subtle jazz influence, blending seamlessly with Chung’s velvety vocals." [16] The song is "an introspective song just this side of sad, questioning a star-crossed relationship gently, without bitterness or anger." [17][18] "Old Montreal" won Best Song at the New York Cinematography Awards.
Its music video, directed and produced by George Chiang, features Chung pondering her lost romance while strolling along the cobblestoned streets of Old Montreal. The music video has received several Best Music Video Awards, including the Canadian Cinematography Awards, Swedish International Film Festival, Virgin Spring Cinefest, Cult Critic Movie Awards and the Golden Lion International Film Festival.[19][20][21]
"Today and Tomorrow" was released with the A World Away album and is featured as the second track. The song is a dreamy acoustic journey about the everlasting love between a mother and a child.[22] “It is about remembering the love, happiness, and sacrifice a mother gives and cherishing those fond memories for a lifetime.[23] The song was praised for its "delicate and graceful vocal performance, detail-rich arrangement, and nuance-infused lyrics that have the ability to effortlessly draw you in, making for once again a beautifully crafted piece of music that you can't help but be warmly enveloped by.[24]The song won the Gold Award for Original Song at the New York Movie Awards.[25]
The music video for "Today and Tomorrow" was directed by Theresa Kowall-Shipp and David Woodside and produced by George Chiang. The music video features Chung playing the piano while images from her life flash on flowing fabrics surrounding her. It won Best Music Video at the Los Angeles Film Awards, Seattle Filmmaker Awards, and the Dreamz Catcher International Film Festival.[26][27][28]
