Inclusive Books for Children (IBC) is a registered charitable organisation based in the UK,[1] aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity in children's literature.[2]

The charity's vision is for inclusive children's books to become more mainstream.[3] They also advocate for greater visibility and representation of Own-Voice authors and illustrators within children's publishing.

Various initiatives run by IBC include a book-review website[4] and an inclusive book awards[5] (see also below).

The IBC website hosts over 800 inclusive books for young children.[6] Their team of book reviewers, with backgrounds in education, libraries, academia and book publishing, provide the book reviews for the site.

History

Inclusive Books for Children was established in November 2022 by Sarah and Marcus Satha.[1]

After a period of research and development[7], the Inclusive Books for Children website launched in September 2023, at an industry event held at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education(CLPE).

Inclusive Books for Children Awards

The Inclusive Books for Children Awards were also launched by the charity in September 2023, to showcase inclusive children's books published in the UK.[2]

For their inaugural award, a £30,000 prize fund was shared between the authors and illustrators of the winning books in each of the following categories:

  • Baby & Toddler books (ages 1-3)
  • Picture Books (ages 3-7)
  • Children's Fiction (ages 5-9)

The 2024 awards were judged by author A. M. Dassu; educator, speaker and author Jeffrey Boakye; influencer and LGBTQ+ and disability rights advocate Jessica Kellgren-Fozard; BBC TV and Magic FM presenter Sonali Shah; CLPE representative and teacher Farrah Serroukh; and author, illustrator and comedian Aoife Dooley.

The inaugural awards ceremony was held at the Barbican Centre on 28 February 2024.
