Because her mother is an Ambassador, Prentiss’s childhood was spent in numerous countries including Ukraine, France, Italy and possibly briefly in the Middle East. Prentiss told David Rossi that while living in Italy as a result of one of her mother's diplomatic postings; she became pregnant at age 15. It was implied that the father of her aborted child is John Cooley. In the episode “Demonology”, Prentiss shared this painful memory with David Rossi while investigating the death of a childhood friend Matthew Benton. Mathew Benton apparently, had helped her get an abortion, which she did against the warnings of her priest and without her parents's knowledge. It was implied that this incident started Benton’s doubt in the Catholic Faith and as a result his parents blame Emily for his troubled life.

Emily Prentiss initially felt like an outsider upon joining the team and often feels that people doubt her ability as a profiler. After Reid was abducted, she experienced a falling out with the young agent due to his harsh treatment of Prentiss (irritability due to his drug addiction). However, with time the two eventually gained a mutual respect. Her relationship with other BAU team members for the most part is friendly. She immediately bonded with agent Morgan due to their mutual love of Kurt Vonnegut books and over time developed a close relationship with JJ (she is often seen hanging out with her and Garcia outside of work).
