Crenshaw/Expo is a station on the Los Angeles Metro Expo Line, under construction. It is located at Crenshaw Boulevard and Exposition Boulevard, in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Los Angeles[1].

This station is currently under construction and is expected to open as part of Expo Phase 1 in 2011[2].

Station Design and Orientation

Crenshaw/Expo is an at-grade side-platform station designed to accommodate Metro light rail vehicles. The station has "near-side" platforms: thus, the westbound platform is on the east side of the intersection, and the eastbound platform is on the west side of the intersection.

Neighborhood and Destinations

Crenshaw station is located on busy Crenshaw Boulevard, a major L.A. thoroughfare. It is a short walk to either Jefferson Blvd. or Rodeo Road. Several popular Crenshaw Boulevard destinations, including the West Angeles Cathedral.

Future Expansion

Metro is planning a new transit project to serve the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Corridor[3]. In December 2009, the Metro board approved several aspects of the project: it will be a light rail line (the "Crenshaw Line") with a northern terminus at Crenshaw/Expo Station[4]. Construction is expected to begin in 2012, with service expected to begin by 2018[5]. In the future, Metro plans to extend the Crenshaw Line north to Wilshire Boulevard.

Thus, Crenshaw/Expo Station will become a Metro Rail transfer station when the Crenshaw Line opens. Metro staff has ruled out an actual junction between the Crenshaw Line and Expo Line, stating that it is operationally not feasible. (Such a junction would result in three lines -- Crenshaw, Expo and the Blue Line -- sharing the single pair of tracks on Flower Street leading into Downtown L.A., putting those tracks well above their capacity.)

Metro staff is studying two potential configurations for the Crenshaw Line's terminal station at Crenshaw/Exposition. One option is an at-grade station, just south of Exposition. The other option is a subway station under Crenshaw between Exposition and Rodeo. Metro staff will study both options for the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR). Once this report is completed, the Metro Board will decide whether or not to fund the increased cost of a subway station.
