Gino N. Jennings (born February 10, 1963) is an American Oneness Pentecostal[1] pastor and Christian leader, who is best known as being the founder and current leader of the First Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (FCOOLJC) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[2]

Controversy

Many people of other denominations and churches have criticized Jennings and the FCOOLJC for some of their stricter beliefs and views, such as the rejection of women in church clergy based on 1st Timothy 2:12, whereby specifically which many Christians have accused them of being "religiously misogynistic",[3][4][5] and speaking in tongues (glossolalia) as a required sign of evidence of being baptized with the Holy Spirit. They also present a staunch advocacy for Nontrinitarianism,[2][6][7][8] water baptism in the name of “Jesus Christ”, or “Lord Jesus” only,[6][8] requiring women to wear headcoverings and only long skirts or long dresses and rejection of the wearing of jewelry and makeup. Jennings also rejects the usage of the name "Christianity" for he believes that "Christianity" is a not a term found in the Bible, unlike the term “Christian”. Instead the word that he believes more accurately describes his congregation's faith should be the term "Holiness," or the "religion of Holiness."[2][6]

Strict code of conduct

Church members' conduct is governed in many respects, including their appearance, how they are to interact with one another, and what activities they are permitted to engage in. According to the Condensed Manual of the Doctrine, Rules, By-laws and Code of Conduct,[9] some of the teachings of Jennings and the FCOOLJC include:

  • Baby showers are not permitted for children born out of wedlock. (p. 22)
  • Girls must have their hair covered from the age of one-year-old and up. (p .38 and 120)
  • Women are not permitted to cut or trim their hair in any manner or for any reason. (p. 39 and 40)
  • Women are not permitted to "wear any apparel which strategically or inadvertently draws attention to body parts". (p. 45)
  • At no age and at no time are girls permitted to wear pants. (p. 120)
  • Men are not permitted to wear shorts in public. (p. 46)
  • Men are not permitted to wear chains or rings. (p. 49)
  • Socks should not have "outlandish or psychedelic" patterns or colors. (p. 47)

The Condensed Manual of the Doctrine, Rules, By-laws and Code of Conduct also provides rules about how girls are to behave from a young age, such as:

"Girls may jump rope and partake in the basic feminine games that the average girl plays. However, at no time are the girls to wear shorts or sweat pants." (p. 121)

"Parents do not allow your daughters to constantly be in brothers’ faces. Teach them how to be shamefaced and not to be forward!" (p. 118)

The Condensed Manual of the Doctrine, Rules, By-laws and Code of Conduct states that "At no time, should a brother or sister make a false accusation against another, especially of a sexual nature." (p. 115) However, it does not address whether or how allegations of sexual harassment or assault should be reported.

Between February and March 2018, Jennings entered the media spotlight for his controversial sermons against women wearing excessive makeup, fake hair, wigs, and jewelry in church; comparing women who do such things to Jezebel and Delilah.[10][5]

"You so-called Christian-looking hoes, jumping in some church, flapping your ankle chains around. On the choir, breasts hanging out, lips all red, nails painted red, purple, blue, green, long like bird claws, all this fake hair, breast implants, toenails painted with little fake diamonds in it. Your toes ain't richer. You're nothing but a prostitute."[11]

Incident in Jamaica

Reverend Carla Dunbar called his comments erroneous and degrading.[3] Jennings defended his statements by saying not to listen to how he sounded, but to what he said in defense of the teachings of Biblical modesty in dress and clothing.[5][10] Jennings agreed to meet with Jamaican entertainer "Mr. Vegas" to debate him. However he had Vegas escorted out of the building by security after an altercation that ensued between Vegas, the church's audio and visual team, and the other associate ministers on the pulpit.[12][3][13] This later led to the debate going viral throughout Jamaica, and two other ministers that agreed to debate him canceled.
