Gyuli Nizamievna Kambarova (Russian: Гюли Низамиевна Камбарова; 9 May 1982, Makhachkala, Russia) is a Dagestan and Russian composer who is a member of the Union of Composers of Russian Federation,[1][2] member of the International Alliance for Women in Music,[3][4] member of the Music Teachers National Association, and member of the Songwriters Guild of America. She authored the music for the documentaries "You Are Not Alone",[5] "Voice for the Voiceless" [6][7] and Fine Line directed by Anna Barsukova.[8] She lives and works in United States.[9][10]

Biography

Gyuli Kambarova is a classically trained pianist and composer graduated from the prestigious Rostov State Rakhmaninov Conservatory (Russia). There she received two Masters’ of Music with honors in Piano Performance and Music Composition.

She began her career in Southern Russia where she was composing, performing and teaching. Gyuli's works started to be acknowledged across the area and widely performed in graduate recitals and concerts, and soon spread across the country. For her contribution to contemporary music she was accepted to the Union of Dagestan Composers and later to the Union of Russian Composers.

After moving to the United States in 2010, Gyuli started developing her career in Louisville area and across the country. She has performed numerous times at the University of Louisville School of Music, Youth Performing Arts School, Louisville Academy of Music, libraries, nursing homes, churches, and other venues in Kentuckiana as a pianist and composer collaborating with many great musicians and dancers.

Besides performing and composing, Gyuli is a very gifted educator with more than 20 years of teaching experience. Her students have won International, National, and Regional piano and composer competitions demonstrating high professional level of both students and the teacher.

Some of Gyuli's achievements are: finalist of the prestigious International Antonin Dvorak Composition Competition (Prague, Czech Republic), winner of the competition "Fifteen-Minutes-Of-Fame: ReImagining Shubert" (New York, USA).

She won the First Place Laureate of the International Composer Competition named after S. Prokofiev (Chelyabinsk, Russia), “Best Jazz Track” by International Music Contest (CA, USA), “Best Film Score – Soundtrack” by Cult Critic Movie Award (Kolkata, India), “Best Soundtrack” by Los Angeles Film Awards (CA, USA).

Gyuli is a recipient of an annual award “Commissioned Composer” of 2019 by Kentucky Music Teachers Association (KY, USA) and winner of the Annual Concert by International Alliance for Women in Music (Washington D.C., USA).

Gyuli Kambarova has developed a unique voice in her compositions; her works incorporate an incredible mixture of Eastern sounds and classical techniques. Her technical prowess enables her to write a wide range of music, of various styles and instruments.

Gyuli has released six CDs: “Dreams” (2014), “My Way” (2016), “Memories” (2018), “Unchained” (2021), “My Little Music Stories” (2023), and “Away From Home” (2023). Gyuli’s CDs include her own instrumental music that covers different styles: classical, romantic, jazz, contemporary, and cinematic. In addition to that, Gyuli composed music for three documentaries by Anna Barsukova (Russia): “You Are Not Alone!” (2017), “Voice for Voiceless” (2019), “Between Despair and Hope” (2022).

She currently resides in San Diego, CA where she continues to compose, teach, perform across the country, and direct her own private music studio “PianissiMore.”

Life and career

Gyuli Kambarova was born on May 9, 1982, in the city of Makhachkala in Republic of Dagestan, Russia. During her early music studies, she has won several youth piano competitions, including I. S. Bach competition - II prize, G. Hasanov competition - II prize, and E. Grieg competition - III prize. In 1996, she started to study piano at the Makhachkala College of Music named after Gotfrid Hasanov with Svetlana Papayan. In 1999 she entered the Lyceum of Music at the Rostov State Conservatory named after Sergei Rachmaninoff. She graduated from the Rostov State Conservatory with degrees in piano performance (2005; Professor Natalia Simonova) and composition with honors (2010; Professor Galina Gontarenko).[2][11][12]

Kambarova started her career in Southern Russia, where she composed music, performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist, as well as taught piano performance and composition.[13][14][15] Her pieces of various genres gained recognition and were widely performed at concerts, festivals and competitions throughout Russia.[2][16]

Composing style

Kambarova's works are distinguished by their unique personal voice, which combines Southern Russia melodies with the rigorous classical technique.[3] The composer writes music of various genres and instrumentation. Her most recent significant projects are the movie scores for the documentaries "You are not Alone" (Russia, 2017) and "Voice for the Voiceless" (Russia, 2019), directed by Anna Barsukova.[3][17]

Life in the United States

Currently Kambarova lives in the US, where she teaches on faculty of the Louisville Academy of Music,[18] Youth Performing Arts School[19] and the University of Louisville School of Music.[20] She sustains an active performing career, takes part in International music festivals and producing CD-albums with her original compositions.[17][21] In 2019 she became a winner of the Commission Composer Competition[22] organized by the Music Teachers National Association and was nominated for the Composer of the Year award, representing the state of Kentucky.[23]

Family

Husband, Samir Kambarov, is a saxophonist and serves of faculty of the University of Louisville as the lecturer in Jazz Studies.[24] They are raising a son Timur.[15]
