José Joaquín Aguirre

José Joaquín Aguirre ( – 1901, Cartagena, Chile) was a Chilean Medic, Politician and Educator.

Disciple of Sazié, excelled early in internal medicine and surgery. José Joaquín Aguirre was elected Member of Parliament several times. He later worked as Governor of the Aconcagua province.

During the War of the Pacific officiated as director of the Ambulance Service, in Chile he formed part of the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Chile from the year 1889 onwards. After the resignation of Jose Ignacio Vergara, he was elected by the faculty's rector.

During his tenure he stimulated the creation of commissions hygene and cleaning. He acquired the land where today stands the Faculty of Medicine and Teaching Hospital of the University that bears his name. He died on January 22 in 1901.
